The government ‘is not restricting access’ to humanitarian organizations, presidential spokesperson Ateny Wek Ateny has said.

This comes after the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), an umbrella organization for local and international Non-Governmental Organizations operating in Uganda reported repeated restrictions by government security agents, especially in Greater Equatoria.

UNOCHA in its regular bulletin said three inter-agency convoys were denied passage into Liwolo, Central Equatoria, while another was unable to proceed after failing to secure clearances from government security organs since the beginning of May.

Last Wednesday a humanitarian convoy seeking to transport non-food items to Kajo-Keji was also unable to proceed.

Ateny Wek says the government is not denying access, but is giving advice to these aid groups against venturing into specific areas.

He spoke to Philip Wani in this interview.
