Chris Moyles's first Radio 1 breakfast- 2004

Episode 302,   Jan 04, 2012, 11:08 PM

Some presenters were born to do the Radio 1 breakfast show. Chris Moyles clearly thought he was, with his under-stated programme start. Like Evans, there was a delicious sense of ‘this is my show – I deserve it – and you’ve waited too long for me’, yet discharged in the sort of way that listeners accepted with a smile.

As he took over the swivel chair from Sara Cox in January 2004, however, maybe even he did not expect to outlive Blackburn’s five and a half years’ tenure on this most sought-after programme.

Chris had done the rounds: Aire, Capital, Luxy. I wonder how many PDs would have identified his potential, on the strength of those early performances alone. As it turned out, he became different enough to be fired; and good enough to be re-hired. Whatever the future holds, his place in radio history is already in neon.
