UNMISS chief insists on “zero tolerance approach” and maintaining civilian character of South Sudan’s PoC sites

The Special Representative of the secretary General who is also head of the UN Peacekeeping Mission in the country, David Shearer, has reaffirmed the missions commitment to maintain a “zero tolerance approach” to any attempts to militarize the protection of civilian sites.

David Shearer, was speaking in Bentiu, north of South Sudan, where around 115,000 people are currently living in the Mission's largest Protection of Civilians site. He stressed that the a "zero tolerance approach", to militarization of the camps is the best way to keep civilians safe.

In an interview with Daniel Dickinson, Spokesperson of the UN Mission in South Sudan, the UNMISS chief said the UN Police Officers are working with community groups in the POC sites to ensure the civilian nature of the camp, as well as security and stability are maintained.
