[...] "I plan to intensify my corporation with regional and sub-regional organisation particularly the African Union and IGAD to come up with a more regional approach to dealing with children affected by conflict.”

The newly appointed Special Representative of the Secretary-General for children and armed conflict is considering a regional approach to stop violations against the children of South Sudan.

Virginia Gamba, who was named Special Representative in April, says her office will strengthen linkages with regional bodies including the African Union and IGAD, in addition to working with the parties involved, to protect the country’s children.

Ms Gamba says the government and opposition forces continue to be named for grave child violations including killing, recruitment, abduction and denial of humanitarian access to children.
