Cyclist Sir Chris Hoy has apologised for saying Lycra looked "awful" on anyone weighing more than 8st. The six-time Olympic gold medalist took to Twitter to say he was "really sorry" for the comment, which he described as "tongue-in-cheek"

Sir Chris told GQ magazine "Avoid skimpy, fluorescent sportswear unless you are whippet-thin because 'it looks pretty awful."

The comments caused uproar amongst mamils - that's middle aged men in lycra.

But should he have apologised?
