Authorities in Wau Receive UN Support to Uphold Human Rights

A team of Human Rights experts from the UN Mission in South Sudan has visited Wau to discuss how the mission can support local authorities in upholding human rights standards in the town and surrounding areas.

Their visit follows recent months of violence and falls under the mandate of the UN Mission to report on and monitor human rights. The team was granted access to both government and opposition held areas.

Christian Stephane Mikala, a senior human rights officer with UNMSIS says they observed that the judiciary in Wau is struggling to function.

Mikala spoke with Irene Lasu saying the UN Mission is committed to supporting the country build effective human rights systems.
