Battle of Saltley gate 1972

A rally for Trades Unionists and Miners is taking place today (10/2/12) to mark the 40th anniversary of the so-called 'Battle of Saltley Gate' in Birmingham. It was a key moment in British Industrial history. As a result, the National Union of Mineworkers forced the government to agree to its demands for a 43% pay rise. It was the first time that Arthur Scargill came to national prominence, and the first time the NUM deployed flying pickets away from the coalfields. Phil Mackie reports
