South Sudanese human rights activist nominated for UN Special Rapporteur position

A South Sudanese Human Rights activist has been nominated for the position of UN Special Rapporteur on assembly and Association Rights.

Rita Lopidia, the Executive Director and Co-Founder of EVE Organization for Women Development is among 43 candidates drawn from various parts of the world. 

The candidates will be reviewed at the next Human Rights Council session taking place from the 26th of February to the 23rd of March.

Michael Ngabirano, a Senior Human Rights Officer in the United Nations Mission in South Sudan says the selected candidate will be expected to work independently to advocate for the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and association.
