Yetnebersh Nigussie is a successful lawyer, feminist, and activist from Ethiopia that fights for the rights of people with disabilities.

Having lost her sight at just five years old, Yetnebersh found it a blessing in disguise as the loss of sight send her on route towards education rather than marriage at the age of 12.

Since then, she has graduated the Addis Ababa University as one of the first blind female lawyers and went on to co-found the ‘Ethiopian Centre for Disability and Development’ (ECDD). Currently she holds the position of Senior Inclusion Adviser for ‘Light for the World’, international disability and development organisation.

Speaking to RNIB Connect Radio’s Simon Pauley, Yetnebersh tells us more about the cultural expectations that women are met with in Ethiopia, discrimination and how her unique situation has led her on a path to become a positive role model and activist
