The Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (JMEC) says the success of the high-level revitalization process is “highly dependent” on the exercise of political will by the South Sudanese parties and their willingness to compromise.

Parties are expected to resume discussions on the 17th of this month in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

JMEC peace monitors in their latest report covering December 1, 2017 to March 31 this year stress the importance of registering progress in the next round of talks.

In a related development, JMEC Communications Adviser Richard Bailey confirms that the body has temporarily suspended its monthly stakeholder meetings pending guidance from IGAD on how to proceed with the addition of new stakeholders.

The parties to the agreement resolved to increase the membership of JMEC, to accommodate relevant groups and stakeholders that have emerged since the start of the conflict in 2013.

The decision was reached in December last year, during the first round of the High-level Revitalization Forum in Addis-Ababa.

Bailey spoke with  Nationwide program Host Sani Martin.
