“Subsidies were benefiting few individuals,” NILEPET welcomes lifting of fuel subsidies

State owned Nile Petroleum Corporation (NILEPET), has welcomed the lifting of fuel subsidies, saying the payouts were causing losses to the government company.

The Council of Ministers last Friday scrapped the subsidies, leaving fuel prices to the market forces of demand and supply.

In an exclusive interview with Radio Miraya, NILEPET Director of Public Relations and Cooperate Affairs, Yiey Puoch Lur said the payouts were benefiting a few individuals and not the people of South Sudan.

He says the directive will encourage healthy competition and free resources to take care of other government business.

According to the 2017/2018 budget estimates, Nilepet was allocated 183 million US dollars to import subsidized fuel for domestic consumption.
