A former hostage who spent almost five years in captivity has been in Kent to celebrate work being done by teachers to get more children interested in reading.

Schools across the county have been recognised at the Kent Literacy Awards.

Terry Waite was captured in Beirut in the late 80s while trying to negotiate the release of other hostages and denied access to book during most of his time in solitary confinement.
