New figures set the enrolment of girls into schools in South Sudan at a record high of 1.7 million students, exceeding a 1.5 million record set last year.

The progress is attributed to combined efforts by the National Ministry of Education and its partners. One such partner is the Girls Education South Sudan - GESS, an initiative of the Ministry of General Education and Instruction and funded by the UK Government, that gives girls cash transfers for primary and secondary school education.

Akuja De Garang, Team Leader of Girls’ Education South Sudan explains more on what motivated the enrolment.
