There are signs EU leaders are preparing to make a major concession to Theresa May on Brexit, granting the single market access on goods.

But in exchange they want the UK to stick with Europe on standards on safety and customs.

It’s a sign of the compromises possible ahead of talks restarting, but hardline Brexit supporters are indicating they wouldn’t support it – highlighting again the difficult trip any deal will have to make through Parliament, and risking a No Deal cliff edge on World Trade Organisation rules.

Peter Ungpakorn is a trade writer and journalist who worked at the WTO secretariat for nearly 20 years. Speaking from Switzerland, he explains what that would really mean.
