Amnesty International has welcomed the conviction and sentencing of 10 SPLA soldiers in connection with the July 2016 attack on the Terrain Hotel in Juba, as a step forward for justice.

The sentences handed by the military court, range from seven years to life imprisonment, while one soldier was acquitted for lack of evidence.

The verdict delivered yesterday, found the soldiers guilty of raping foreign aid workers, murder and looting during a rampage at the Terrain Hotel compound.

Seif Mangago is Amnesty International’s Deputy Director for East Africa, the Horn and the Great Lakes region. He says the ruling is a first step towards ending impunity of forces.
