Special Representative, who is also head of the UN Mission in South Sudan, David Shearer, has urged the government to bring soldiers under control, after a Nepalese peacekeeper was shot and wounded by a government soldier on Saturday morning.

The peacekeeper was part of a convoy travelling near the town of Yei, in Central Equatoria state.

A statement released earlier by the office of the mission’s spokesperson said “A government SPLA soldier had begun shooting in the air near the UNMISS convoy of four vehicles, including two water tankers. The soldier then shot directly at one of the vehicles, hitting the Nepalese peacekeeper in the leg, and ran off into a crowd.

"The troops were unable to return fire as they did not want to risk injuring civilians,” the statement read.

This is how the SRSG reacted to this incident coming hardly a week after the Revitalized agreement to resolve the conflict in South Sudan was signed.
