UNMISS police commissioner, Unaisi Lutu Vuniwaqa, on improving protection of civilians through gender-responsive policing

UN Police commissioners attending the UN police week in New York, have underlined the need for Increased deployment of women police, to build trust with local populations.

UNMISS police commissioner, Unaisi Lutu Vuniwaqa, told the Security Council on Wednesday that the mission has made great efforts to advance gender sensitive policing by introducing mixed Formed Police Units where some 50 percent are women.

Vuniwaqa said evidence indicates that women police officers and mixed Formed Police Us act as a catalyst that promote confidence, encourage survivors of sexual violence to report incidents, and enable civilians to share strategic information.
