Special cakes to celebrate the roll-out of universal credit, are they having a laugh? #BBCNolan
"Tasteless and insensitive," that's how SDLP Deputy leader Nichola Mallon has described the Department of Communities purchase of 40 cakes decorated with the Universal credit logo to celebrate the end of the roll out of the new benefits system. Reported in yesterday's Irish News, civil servants spent over £1000 on the treats for staff. The Universal Credit system has faced much criticism with concerns that thousands are worse off than before and the wait for initial payments is causing financial hardship.
