A price cap for energy customers on what are often the most expensive tariffs is now in force.

The limit on so-called “standard variable tariffs”, which are the default for providers, is now £1,137.

The regulator says it’ll save 11 million people an average of £76 a year, but energy firms say its restrictive, and consumer groups are warning better deals for switchers are already disappearing as costs are expected to rise.
