Congress up in arms against BJP over Karnataka row, will hold statewide protests
Protesting the alleged attempt by the BJP to poach Karnataka Congress MLAs, the workers of Youth Congress turned up outside the BJP headquarters in Bengaluru riding horses.
A group of Youth Congress workers also protested outside a resort in Haryana where the BJP's Karnataka MLAs have been camping in an "effort to thwart any poaching attempt" by the JD(S)-Congress ruling coalition.
The JD(S)-Congress coalition government in Karnataka, led by HD Kumaraswamy, is embroiled in poaching crisis. After two independent MLAs, R Shankar and H Nagesh, withdrew their support to the government on Tuesday, rumour mill has been agog that the government's fall was imminent as many other Congress MLAs may follow suit and resign from their respective constituencies.
According to sources, the BJP is offering money to JDS MLAs to jump ship with JDS MLA Shivalinge Gowda “one person from JDS has been offered Rs 60 crore.” Meanwhile, former Karnataka CM and and Congress leader Siddharamaiah has directed all Congress MLAs to be present at the Congress Legislature Meeting that is slated to take place tomorrow, even going as far as to implement an anti-defection law against absentees. The meeting called by the party is an apparent attempt to keep the flock together.
HD Kumaraswamy on Wednesday accused the Opposition BJP of creating “nuisance” to destabalise the coalition government. He, however, expressed confidence that the current crisis would fizzle out soon.
One body of miner detected 32 days after 15 miners got trapped in Meghalaya’s Jaintia Hills
In what looks to be an unfolding tragedy, the body of one of the miners who had been trapped in an illegal coal mine in Meghalaya’s Jaintia Hill was detected according to sources. Rescue teams including the Indian Navy and National Disaster Response Force managed to locate the body with the help of an Underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle. It’s been over a month since the miners got trapped in the mine after water from a nearby river surged inside. Interesingly, even after crores of litres of water were pumped out, water levels remain over 350-feet deep.
Ram Rahim verdict out today, Panchkula police and local administration remain on their toes
The CBI court in Panchkula will be announcing the verdict in the journalist Ram Chander Chhatrapati murder case against Gurmeet Ram Rahim. The Dera Sacha Sauda chief is serving a 20-year jail term after being convicted in two cases of rape.
Three others, who were close aides of the sect chief, were also convicted.
Police and administration remain on tenterhooks especially in the aftermath of the violence, which left 40 dead following the conviction of the Ram Rahim in August 2017.

RLD wrestles its way to 3 seat-share agreement, looking to get one more within BSP-SP alliance
. The Samajwadi Party (SP), which has finalized its electoral alliance with the Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), plans to make Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) part of the anti-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) front in Uttar Pradesh.

Former chief minister and SP chief Akhilesh Yadav met RLD vice president Jayant Chaudhary in Lucknow on Wednesday to discuss the prospects of RLD becoming part of the alliance.
“It was a good discussion (on seat-sharing) with Akhilesh and you will know the outcome soon,” Chaudhary said after the meeting.
The meeting between the RLD and the SP leaders comes in the wake of the seat-sharing arrangement announced by the SP and the BSP on 12 January. The two parties would contest 38 seats each and leave Amethi and Rae Bareli for the Congress party and two seats for the RLD.
The SP, BSP, and RLD first came together during the Kairana bypolls last year when the three parties had managed to defeat the BJP in a direct contest.
Rashtriya Lok Dal has bargained its way to secure 3 seats in the recent alliance struck between them, the Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party in Uttar Pradesh for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The seat-sharing agreement was confirmed following RLD National Vice President Jayant Chaudhary’s meeting with SP chief Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday. Sources within the party have however said that the party is pitching for one more seat, after its successful negotiations for the Bagpat, Muzaffarnagar and Mathura seats.

Dinesh Maheshwari and Sanjiv Khanna elevated to SC despite controversy
. Putting to rest the simmering controversy, the Central government has cleared both the names recommended by the Collegium for appointment as Supreme Court judges.
Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court Dinesh Maheshwari and Delhi High Court judge Sanjiv Khanna will be elevated as the judges in the Supreme Court, taking its strength to 28. The top court has an approved strength of 31 judges.
The Collegium’s recommendations were questioned because the Collegium had abruptly dropped two other names that were discussed earlier while making the fresh recommendations.
It was pointed out that Justice Dinesh Maheshwari had already been overlooked in the previous meeting of the Collegium that comprises the Chief Justice of India and the four most senior judges. But he was suddenly recommended in the next meeting a letter in the past by former SC judge J Chelameswar, accusing the judge of doing “executive bidding”.
Similarly, contentions were raised against elevating Justice Khanna who happens to be at number 33 in the All India Seniority list of the HC judges A section of former judges and lawyers were of the opinion that the Collegium’s recommendations did not appear to be proper for various reasons.
Delhi HC judge Kailash Gambhir in a letter to the President even said that it would be a ‘black day” in history of the Indian judiciary if Khanna is allowed to supercede the 32 other senior judges.
Rakesh Asthana moves court on corrections after his plea to quash FIR was quashed
CBI Special Director Rakesh Asthana moved an application in Delhi High Court on Wednesday, 16 January, seeking correction in the recent judgment which refused to quash an FIR against him. The application by Asthana will be heard on Thursday, reported ANI.
Alongside, the Supreme Court on Wednesday also agreed to hear a plea against M Nageshwar Rao’s appointment as the interim CBI director. The plea, which also sought transparency in the process of appointment, will be heard next week.
The following week is likely to be eventful for the CBI as the selection panel is set to meet on 24 January to decide on the new CBI director.
