The SPLM-IO is preparing to petition IGAD seeking the withdrawal of the constitutional amendment bill from the Ministry of Justice.
The National Constitutional Amendment Committee (NCAC) handed over the amendments to the Minister of Justice last week, for scrutiny and legal endorsement, before the eventual incorporation of the amendments into the transitional national constitution.
The SPLM-IO declined to sign the amendments, objecting to the presentation of the Bill to the current transitional government and not the Reconstituted Government. They also refused to endorse the changes until the issue of decentralization and devolution of powers has been resolved.
In an exclusive interview with Radio Miraya, the SPLM-IO representative to the National Constitutional Amendment Committee, Oyet Nathaniel Penono said they are opposed to the procedure and some of the changes made to the bill.
Oyet says they want IGAD as guarantors to the agreement to direct the NCAC to withdraw the bill and make the necessary amendments.
