Virginia Governor Apologizes for 'Racist and Offensive' Costume in 1984 Yearbook

(RICHMOND, Va.) — Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam's page in his 1984 medical school yearbook contains a photo of a person in blackface and another wearing a Ku Klux Klan hood next to different pictures of the governor.

The revelation of the photographs prompted some Republicans to call for his resignation Friday. Northam quickly apologized.

The governor confirmed in a statement that he was in the photo wearing a costume "that is clearly racist and offensive.
