Swarms of deadly desert locusts hover over Eritrea coastline

Episode 784,   Feb 05, 2019, 06:10 AM

The Minister of Agriculture, Onyoti Adigo, says swarms of the dangerous desert locusts have been spotted hovering over the Red Sea, near the border with Eritrea.

“The locusts can travel as far as 1,000 miles a night,” said Adigo.

The Council of Ministers last Friday approved more than 2 billion pounds and eight hundred thousand US dollars to avert the threat of the deadly insects that are capable of destroying crop harvests and causing massive food insecurity.

Onyoti says the country needs to be prepared to deal with the threat.
