The AU peace and security council visited Yei River state on Wednesday for an onspot assessment of the status of the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement.
The commission visited Yei to find out why the cessation of hostilities agreement is not holding.
Ambassador Catherine Muigai Mwagi, Chairperson of the African Union Peace and Security Council, said that the commission needs to understand the reasons why cessation of hostilities has not been observed and what sort of interventions are needed.
“So we came here so that we can better understand what the reason is for that so that even as we go back as the peace and security council, we know what sort of interventions we can recommend to try and make sure that that agreement on the cessations of hostilities is fully implemented especially here in Yei.”
Ambassador Catherine Muigai Mwagi commended the government and parties to the agreement for the progress made in implementing the agreement.
“The government and the opposition parties are now working together towards implementing the peace agreement."
She said the AU peace and security council has seen some commendable successes and progress.
"But as we say obviously there are some concerns and there are some areas that need special attention to ensure that they are implemented to complete the implementation especially for the pre-transition period.”
