A new report has warned that more than £1 billion is needed to upgrade Northern Ireland's road network. The Audit Office says annual funding has been, on average, £50 million less than what was needed for maintenance resulting in a backlog of repairs. Also compensation paid to drivers here whose vehicles were damaged by potholes and other road defects has more than doubled in the last two years. Figures obtained by a BBC News FOI shows the amount of compensation rose from £321,849 in 2016 to £751,926 in 2018. Stephen got the views of transport expert Wesley Johnston who runs the Northern Ireland Roads website and the commentator and former special advisor Brendan Mulgrew.
