Chiefs and traditional leaders from Jubek state conclude a training today that seeks to harmonize customary law and statutory law.

The three-day interactive discussion aims to identify inconsistencies between the two systems and explore ways of aligning traditional practices with international human rights standards.

The training programme is guided by a joint manual developed by UNDP and UN Women, and facilitated by UNDP’s Support to Access to Justice and Rule of Law Project in collaboration with national and state Local Government Board authorities, legal administration offices, UN agencies and civil society.

In this short discussion the Miraya Breakfast Show spoke to participants, Sultan Beda Elia, a Chief in Jebel Ladu County and Rowland Cole, UNDP Chief Technical Advisor.
