President Omar al-Bashir has been removed from office after three decades in power. A Military Council is in control of the country for a two-year interim period. 

Defence Minister, Awad Mohamed Ahmed Ibn Auf announced the military takeover and the end to the Al-Bashir regime on state television.

James Ukuk says the regime change will not affect the South Sudan peace process and contests that the developments could in fact, improve South Sudan – Sudan relations.
