The International Day of the Midwife was celebrated on May 05th by midwives all over the world.
The theme for the day was “Midwives: Defenders of Women’s Rights”.
Midwives in South Sudan are crucial when it comes to reducing maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality, in a country with one of the worlds highest maternal mortality ratios in the world estimated at 789 deaths per 100,000 live births.
To get a broader perspective of how midwives in South Sudan race against time to save lives of children and women, Radio Miraya spoke to Dr. Gillian Butts-Garnett, UNFPA Midwifery Programme Specialist and Polly Grace, Chairperson of the nurses and midwives association in Jubek state.
