Episode 961,   Jul 18, 2019, 08:57 AM

As the world marks Mandela Day today, the people of South Sudan are being encouraged to draw inspiration from the values and ideals of the former South African President and freedom fighter to realize lasting peace and drive the country forward.

Mandela as a peace icon and fighter for social justice, spent 27 years in prison, negotiated the end of apartheid and became South Africa’s first black president.

South Africa’s Ambassador to South Sudan, Gordon Yekelo says South Sudan leaders must set aside their differences and make peace a reality.

Today’s commemoration marks the 10th anniversary since the United Nations marked the 18 of July as the International Nelson Mandela Day.

The day will officially be marked in South Sudan by a tree-planting event at the University of Juba organized by the Embassy of South Africa, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization and the United Nations Mission in South Sudan.

Ambassador Yekelo describes Mandela as towering legacy who stood for reconciliation across tribes, religion and race and urged the people of South Sudan to draw lessons for his fight for social justice and reconciliation with his oppressors.

The Ambassador spoke to Sebit William and Irene Lasu about Mandela’s legacy.
