Amnesty international released a report accusing South Sudan of arbitrary restriction and arrest, harassment and intimidation of peaceful demonstrators.

The report released on Wednesday says in May government launched an intensive crackdown on members of the Red Card Movement in the country and intimidated and harassed movement members in the region.

The rights group said the move contravened the rights to peaceful demonstration and called on the South Sudan government to respect dissenting views.

South Sudan ministry of foreign affairs spokesperson, Mawein Akol Arik told Radio Miraya on phone that the Amnesty international report was baseless. He said South Sudan allows peaceful demonstration within the Country and is incapable of suppressing demonstrators abroad.

Amnesty international Deputy Director for East Africa and Horne of Africa, Sarah Jackson spoke to Nelson Lwak in this interview.
