Composition 2019/20 (Untitled) uses a sample of chiming bells of the Spasskaya Tower, in Red Square, Moscow. Moscow is one of my favourite cities - but when I visit I avoid tourist spots like the plague - and so never got to places such as Red Square or the Kremlin. Instead - I take shelter from the crowds - and spend most of my time at the New Tretyakov gallery - which has an extensive collection of Constructivist and Suprematist art - including work by Kazimir Malevich - Lyubov Popova - and Alexander Rodchenko. Malevich’s ‘Black Square’ of 1915 has been an important influence on my compositional practice - which is charactered by sparse textures - minimal content - and maximal repetition.
Composition 2019/20 (Untitled) is a collision between the original sound of the bells and the technology that was used to create the final work - with the sound of the bells altered almost beyond recognition. The Red Square full of noisy tourists has been transformed into a more sublime space - and evokes the black square of Malevich.
