UNMISS steps up deployment of peacekeepers to remote communities

The Special Representative of the Secretary General in South Sudan and Chief of he United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), David Shearer, says the transitional government of national unity should be formed on November 12 without delay, and all outstanding issues taken up by the unity government as a unified body of opposition and government.

Addressing a press conference in Juba on Wednesday, Mr. Shearer said peace is still fragile, and advised that critical issues of unifying armed forces and decisions about states and boundaries still need to be resolved. 

On the humanitarian front, Mr. Shearer said about 20,000 people have voluntarily left UN Protection of Civilian sites since the peace agreement was signed and announced a more robust deployment of peacekeepers to remote communities, to provide a more protective presence for people returning to their homes. 

Mr. Shearer also announced a scheduled visit by the Council to Juba on the 25th of this month.
