Same sex marriage is now legal in NI – but couples who want a religious ceremony face a wait

Same sex marriage is now legal in Northern Ireland.

The law came into effect yesterday, with Amnesty International describing it as an historic day for equality and human rights.

The first couples wanting to get married could set their dates for the week of Valentine's Day.

But those who want a religious marriage ceremony - and couples who wish to convert their civil partnership to marriage - will have to wait for the outcome of further government consultations.
