The ascensores in Valparaiso, Chile are famous mechanical lifts, more than a hundred years old, that are both an extremely practical way to get up the huge hills that dominate the city and a tourist attraction that shows off a distinctly old-school way of getting around.
This recording shows off their distinctive clattering sounds, which could only come from this part of the world!
