Episode 1269,   May 20, 2020, 07:20 AM

A new report by the United Nations reveals that survivors of conflict-related sexual violence in South Sudan continue to struggle to access adequate medical and mental health care.

The report issued jointly by the United Nations Mission in South Sudan and the UN Human Rights Office looks at access and quality of care available in Unity and the Central and Western Equatorian regions, which account for 85 percent of conflict-related sexual violence cases.

The Director of the UNMISS Human Rights Division, Eugene Nindorera says the report highlights key challenges facing survivors of SGBV as they try to access medical attention.

The report recommends substantial increases in government investments in the health sector and investigating and prosecuting offenders. UNMISS Human Rights Director Eugene Nindorera says the government must ultimately prioritize health care in its budget allocations.

The report has been shared with the government through the ministry of gender, child and social welfare.
