Seaons 3: #6 Tony Oakey

Oct 07, 2020, 04:00 PM

Tony Oakey is one of Britain's most-popular light-heavyweight champions. Adored by his Portsmouth fans, he took part in multiple thrilling battles but he also hit the headlines for the wrong reasons when he was suspended after a positive cocaine test following the first loss of his career.

A dark period followed but when he returned to the ring, the decorated three-time ABA finallist and two-time winner was involved in more wars. He fought the likes of Dean Francis, Nathan Cleverly, Peter Haymer, Brian Magee, Steve Spartacus, Matthew Barney, Neil Simpson, rival Neil Linford and many more. There were fights after the final bell of his pro career against friend Wayne Elcock and two well-documented contests with American Jeff Lacy.

Here, Oakey reflects on his career, the night Peter Oboh – the most-feared man in British boxing at the time – left the arena without facing him, the wins, the losses and much more.
