For the past 14 months Fr D'Arcy has had to submit his weekly column for The Sunday World to the church for approval before it is published, and its thought the same should also happen for his broadcasts. According to Catholic newspaper The Tablet, Father D'Arcy was targeted by the 'Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith' after an anonymous complaint in 2011. Fr D'Arcy has spoken out against mandatory celibacy for priests, Church teaching on contraception and has been a vocal critic of the handling of clerical sexual abuse. He told the Irish News that "I would hope that after 50 years in the church there would be respect for my right to have dialogue."
