They said it couldn’t be done! The terrain was too barren, the mountains too lofty, the task too ambitious. But the Railroad at the Top of the World linking China with Tibet is proceeding apace. Not surprising. China has a long history of doing what the rest of the world considers impossible. Think Great Wall. Think Three Gorges Dam. When the railroad is finished in 2007, it will run 695 miles from Lhasa to Golmud at nosebleeding heights of up to 16,000 feet above sea level. Opinions differ on what will happen to Tibet once it becomes a stop on China’s commuter express to modernization. Meanwhile, all aboard.
