Donald Trump's Taxes with David Cay Johnston and Renato Mariotti

Episode 33,   Oct 03, 2020, 04:30 AM

In this episode, Jill and Victor talk with David Cay Johnston and Renato Mariotti, who will help us understand Trump’s tax returns as reported by the New York Times. We’ll also talk to them about how the tax system benefits the rich, the possible political and legal implications -- both criminal and civil -- of Trump’s tax returns, and hopefully help you understand why Trump’s taxes should matter to you, the ultimate arbiter in this election.

David is a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter and bestselling author of The Making of Donald Trump. He has lectured on economics, journalism, and tax policy on every continent except Antarctica and is a former president of Investigative Reporters & Editors (IRE). David also teaches at Syracuse University College of Law, is a frequent guest on MSNBC, CNN, the BBC, ABC World News Tonight, Democracy Now, and NPR’s Morning Edition, among other shows. Even more interesting, he was a consultant for the Netflix series “House of Cards.”

Renato Mariotti is a partner at Thompson Coburn LLP and was formerly a federal prosecutor in the Securities and Commodities Fraud Section of the United States Attorney’s Office. During his nine years at the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois, Renato tried more than a dozen criminal trials and prosecuted a wide array of cases including some relating to tax evasion. Renato also appears on television networks like MSNBC and CNN to discuss legal issues.
