Show #1045

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 8th April. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

NISSAN LEAF PRICE REDUCTIONS

A couple of follow-ups from yesterdays podcast. We talked about the Nissan price reductions, but one listener asked how MUCH was the LEAF reduced by? So here goes with a number dump...

  • Acenta £25,995 (£1,350)
  • N-Connecta £27,995 (£650)
  • LEAF 10 £28,670 (£650)
  • Tekna £29,995 (£665)
  • E+ N-Connecta £30,445 (Downwards arrow £5,250)
  • E+ Tekna £32,445 (Downwards arrow £5,265)

TESLA MODEL 3 SELLS WELL IN UK & GERMANY

Second follow up from yesterday we talked about the UK plug-in share being 14% in March, but what about specific cars? "As usual, we have very thin up-to-date numbers from the SMMT on popular plugin models in the UK. Worth noting is that several of the top 10 best selling autos now have plugin variants (table below)." says Max Holland at CleanTechnica: "The Tesla Model 3, thanks to its usual end-of-quarter push, did get in to the top 10 overall autos in March, at #4 spot. Its total volume over the first quarter – of around 7,300 – should have put it at a respectable #11 spot on the overall best sellers list for the year so far, a good result." Remember the UK government removed the car grant on March 18th but Tesla responded by saying they would artificially rude their prices, ie keep them the same for the customer, IF you ordered by March 31st. So Tesla taking the hit might have persuaded people to bring forward purchases.

Tesla's German registrations in Q1 were up 83% year-over-year. Tesla registered 6,074 vehicles in Germany. In March alone it was 3,703. In Germany most EVs were sold by VW though, with over 10,000 in Feb of the ID.3, e-UP and PHEV Golf.

BMW GROUP SOLD OVER 70,000 PLUG-INS IN Q1

BMW Group sales of electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles totaled 70,207 in in the first quarter of the year, an increase of 129.8% percent over the 30,692 sold in the same period a year ago.

With the BMW iX3, which was just released in Europe a few weeks ago, the BMW i3 and the MINI Cooper SE, the BMW Group already offers a strong range of fully-electric vehicles that will be joined over the course of the year by two key innovation flagships: the BMW iX and the BMW i4.

The BMW Group expects fully-electric vehicles to account for at least 50% of its global sales in 2030. The MINI brand is likely to reach this milestone already in 2027.

MERCEDES SNAGS A EUROPEAN TRADEMARK FOR EQG

"Last fall, Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius talked about the company's plans to electrify its popular G-Class SUV, and now, a European Union Intellectual Property Office filing found by members of the MBEQClub forum and reported on by The Drive Friday shows that Mercedes has trademarked the name "EQG." " says CNET: "This trademark filing very likely means that Mercedes is planning on offering a fully-battery-electric Geländewagen, rather than one that's merely been "electrified" with a hybrid system."

TESLA ROLLS OUT PREFAB SUPERCHARGER

"A recent Supercharger installation in Beaver, Utah, has caught the eye of the electric vehicle community. Based on an image shared of the Supercharger site, it appears that the charging stalls have been pre-installed on a large concrete slab. Speculations initially suggested that the setup was just an updated iteration of the Megapack-powered mobile Superchargers that Tesla deploys during peak seasons, but it soon became evident that the setup in the recently-shared images was quite different. " reports Teslarati: "By setting up the Superchargers and their electronics on large concrete slabs even before they are placed in their respective locations, Tesla would be able to complete Supercharger installations much faster. It could also help the company install large numbers of Superchargers more efficiently.

The pic shows a line of 4 superchargers and 2 cabinets on one flatbed truck.

TESLA DELAYS DELIVERIES OF NEW MODEL S AND MODEL X ELECTRIC VEHICLES

"Tesla buyers who ordered the new, recently refreshed Model S and Model X models are seeing their deliveries being pushed back as the automaker is experiencing delays in bringing the vehicles to production. When Tesla unveiled the new refreshed Model S and Model X in January, CEO Elon Musk said that the first deliveries would happen within a few weeks." says electrek: " That was six weeks ago, and there has yet to be a single reported new Model S or Model X delivery. Tesla appears to have run into some issues in producing and/or getting the new Model S and Model X ready for deliveries. Now, many Tesla buyers who placed orders early after the new Model S was launched are seeing their estimated delivery dates pushed back by a few months."

Elon Musk said on the earning call that he would hold an event within a couple of weeks to discuss the cars in more detail...that never happened.

2021 WORLD CAR OF THE YEAR: VW ID.4 AND HONDA E AMONG FINALISTS

"The recently announced short list of finalists for The 2021 World Car of the Year (WCOTY) award include several electric cars - two in the main category. Volkswagen ID.4 and Honda e will compete for the World Car of the Year title. We can see two more all-electric models - Polestar 2 and Mazda MX-30 - considered also in specific categories" says InsideEVs: "The last time we saw an electric car on the top was the Jaguar I-PACE in 2019, and previously the Nissan LEAF in 2011."

"A jury of 93 distinguished international automotive journalists selected the finalists by secret ballot based on their evaluation of each eligible vehicle as part of their professional work. KPMG tabulated the vote results."

Honda e also up for World Urban Car, Polestar 2 for World Luxury Car and MX-30 for World Car Design Of The Year.

ANDROID AUTO GETS NAVIGATION AND EV CHARGING APPS

"Users of Android Auto should start to see a greater selection of in-car compatible apps on the Play Store. According to an announcement on Google’s Android developer blog, Android Auto devs working on navigation, parking, and EV charging apps can now push them to production." according to TheNextWeb: "Apps from the likes of Chargepoint, PlugShare, A Better Route Planner, and T Map, should start appearing on the Play Store very soon. Drivers can now use the apps as part of Android Auto on their car’s main infotainment screen without needing to be signed up to the beta program."

HYUNDAI-KIA WON’T USE CANOO EV PLATFORM

"Canoo’s deal with Hyundai-Kia announced last year appears to have fallen flat. New Canoo chairman Tony Aquila broke the news last Monday during an “icy investor call,” as The Verge reports. The collapse is set against a backdrop of a strategy change at Canoo." reports electrive: "The Californian start-up seems to want to keep their skateboard platform to themselves and sell vehicles to fleet operators rather than selling the EV technology to third parties. Canoo had announced the deal with Hyundai in February 2020, and it was supposed to result in both the Hyundai and Kia brands building vehicles on Canoo’s electric vehicle platform."

HYUNDAI UNVEILS 2021 KONA ELECTRIC PRICING FOR AUS

"Hyundai has released pricing and specifications details for the 2021 Kona Electric, which gets not only a fresh new face but also an increase in range and new driver-assist and technology features. Doing away with the honeycomb-style “grille” in favour of a sleeker nose and lines, the 2021 Hyundai Kona Electric offers 484km (WLTP) driving range up from the 2019 model’s 449km, thanks in part to new low rolling resistance tyres." says thedriven.io: "It will still offer the same 150kW power output from its single-speed motor, as well as the same battery size, but pricing will increase slightly to a base price of $62,000 for the Elite model and $66,000 for the range-topping Highlander."

BLUE BIRD DELIVERS ELECTRIC SCHOOL BUS EQUIPPED WITH NUVVE V2G TECH

"Iconic school bus manufacturer Blue Bird has delivered an electric school bus equipped with V2G (vehicle-to-grid) technology from Nuvve, one of two Blue Bird Type C electric buses delivered to two school districts in Illinois. The e-buses are powered by the Cummins PowerDrive EV system." says ChargedEVs: "Nuvve’s V2G platform allows the bus batteries to store energy, allowing fleets to sell energy to local utilities at times of peak demand. The system can also be used to supply energy to the school and to intelligently charge the buses during non-peak hours to reduce utility demand charges. Hollis Consolidated School District’s latest e-bus purchase makes the district’s fleet 100% electric. "

NEW CUPRA BORN - WINTER TESTING AT -30 DEGREES

"Winter time just a few kilometres from the Arctic Circle. A completely white land, where about 200 words are used to describe snow by the local culture, with temperatures reaching 30 below zero and a circuit on a 6 km2 frozen lake.  The CUPRA engineers have spent two years testing the car on this harsh environment, using cutting-edge technology to take the development of the CUPRA Born to the highest level. Now in the final test stage before its launch, they are pushing the brand’s first 100% electric car to its limits in the most difficult conditions."

Will be made alongside the ID.3 and ID.4 in Germany.
