Show #1043

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 5th April. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

NICO ROSBERG’S TEAM MAKES HISTORY AS FIRST EXTREME E WINNER

Rosberg X Racing made history as first Extreme E winner at the inaugural race weekend in AlUla, Saudi Arabia. The final race of weekend saw Nico Rosberg’s Extreme-E team take on Lewis Hamilton‘s X44 team and Andretti United team.

With the Desert X Prix now done-and-dusted, the cars will be loaded back onto the St. Helena – Extreme E’s floating centrepiece – to set sail for Lac Rose in Senegal, the setting for the Ocean X Prix on 29/30 May.

TESLA'S COLLISION COURSE WITH GERMAN UNION

"As Tesla works to get its mammoth new factory in Germany up and running by the summer, disturbing delicate reptile habitats may be the least of Elon Musk's worries.  After sparring with locals over everything from water supply to deforestation, there may be an even larger threat looming: Germany's largest union." says Business Insider: "Tesla hasn't made many friends of labor activists in the US, and the 2.2-million-strong IG Metall isn't likely to go down without a fight, experts told Insider. Allowing a massive non-union plant to build cars in Germany would set the dangerous precedent that companies don't need to engage in collective bargaining, he said. It would also mean thousands of members would potentially go without the contractually enforced job security, wages, and benefits the rest of the industry enjoys."

VW CEO TAKES BLAME FOR VOLTWAGEN

"Volkswagen of America’s chief executive took responsibility and apologized for the pre-April Fools’ Day prank this week in which the company claimed it was changing its U.S. name to “Voltswagen.” The gag unraveled on April Fools’ Day when sources at the company revealed it really was a prank, the automaker that evening acknowledging There will be no renaming of Volkswagen of America" says The Detroit Bureau: "The problem is that VW is still struggling to rebuild its reputation after the damage it suffered from its diesel emissions scandal. Now, it has been shown willing to play fast and loose with the facts, again. Not many folks were amused, particularly in the news media, many journalists noting that sources at VW not only participated in the prank but openly lied when speaking on background."

ARE TOYOTA AND SUBARU PLANNING A PERFORMANCE EV?

"A user over on the GR86 forums has come across patents filed by Toyota and Subaru detailing a new electric car body and structure. With rumors abound of a hot hatch being co-developed by the Japanese automakers, this could be the new platform." says car Buzz: "Rumors have been brewing for a long time about a GR Corolla and an AWD Subaru performance vehicle as co-ventures, both most likely hatchbacks. The only reference to motors is a singular "traction motor," but the patent is about the frame and body design. That leaves us wondering if this is the platform that both would be based on."

AUDI EXPLAINS DECISION TO FAVOUR DAKAR

Audi says a greater freedom to develop new technologies in the Dakar Rally was one of the key reasons why it quit Formula E. The news coincided with Audi launching two new motorsport programmes: a return to the Le Mans 24 Hours with an LMDh car and an electric project in the Dakar Rally. Audi expanded on its decision to join the Dakar, saying it was lured by a set of technical regulations that gave it complete control over all design aspects of the electric car." says motor1.com: "This, it said, was in stark contrast to Formula E, where all teams use spec chassis and batteries supplied by third-party manufacturers, leaving them with limited elements to develop on the powertrain. Dakar Rally promoter Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO) made it clear during this January's event that it is betting on hybrid and electric technologies in the short-to-mid future, with the ultimate goal of switching to hydrogen propulsion racing by 2030."

BATTERY TECHNOLOGY IN THE MERCEDES EQS SEDAN WILL RIVAL TESLA

"We recently reported that Mercedes Benz plans to introduce four new electric-only models by 2022, which means that Tesla is facing the most competition in the EV space for the first time in its history.  In addition to the EQS sedan, Mercedes Benz will introduce a pair of SUVs, which will be based on the same Electric Vehicle Architecture (EVA platform) that underpins the EQS sedan.  If Mercedes Benz decides to equip its EQS SUV with the same battery pack as the sedan version, it will also give Tesla's flagship Model X SUV a run for its money." repots Future Car: "Mercedes Benz confirmed that EQS electric sedan will get a 108 kWh battery pack which will offer roughly 479 miles (770 km) of driving range. The 479-mile range estimate easily beats the Long Range Model S. Although Tesla is giving the Model S an overdue refresh that may help to boost its appeal for EV buyers, deliveries of the 1,100+ horsepower Plaid+ Models S won't start until mid-2022. The upcoming Plaid+ will be Tesla's longest range offering in the segment with a range of 520 miles respectively. In the meantime, we can treat the Air Grand Touring sedan from Lucid Motors as the long range benchmark, as the company claims it will have a range of 517 miles."

AMG'S CEO ON A STRATEGY FOR THE FUTURE

"There's a lot going on at Daimler's AMG performance division. This week, they took the veil off the P3 plug-in hybrid platform, designed to work with both the AMG 2.0-liter four and the AMG 4.0-liter V-8. And AMG confirmed that it's working on its own derivative of the upcoming fully electric EQS." says Car & Driver: "AMG CEO Philipp Schiemer took the time for a chat with Car and Driver to talk about the brand's strategy.  Speaking in general terms, the still-fresh CEO, who took over the brand last summer, singled out his task to carry AMG into the electric era and "to speak to a younger and more female customer base besides our heritage customers." But, he hastens to add: "We will not be politically correct."

DUTCH PLAN TO INSTALL A MILLION CHARGERS BY 2030

"The Dutch discovered that they need an extra one and a half million (1,500,000) chargers by the end of this decade. They decided to get them all installed. Of those extra chargers needed, over half a million are private chargers. Installing them is mostly a concern for private parties. Nearly a million are public or semi-public chargers." says CleanTechnica: " The solution was to coordinate the placing of the public chargers by the municipalities. When ordering a BEV at a dealer, a new driver could request a public curbside charger to be placed near her or his house. With luck, it would arrive at the same time as the car. The municipality asked its charging network provider to place a curbside charger close to the house. Red tape and paperwork were taken care of by the municipality. The charging company placed chargers near customers, and drivers got a charger close to their home, mostly within 100 meters."

Netherlands plans to go from 166,000 evs today to 2 million in 2030.

EV SALES DOWN AS COMPANY CAR TAX RISES

"The sale of electric cars almost halved in the first three months of this year, following changes in the tax rules for company cars, car association RAI has told BNR In total, 4,545 electric cars were sold in the first three months of the year, down 48% on the same period in 2020" sayhs dutchnews.nl: "In 2020, company car drivers had to pay income tax on 8% of the value of cheaper electric cars, but that has gone up to 12% this year.  For company cars worth over €40,000, the add-on is 22%, the same as for diesel-powered vehicles."

Meanwhile in the UK: "SMMT analysis of new car registrations in 2020 show that just 4.6% of privately bought cars were battery electric vehicles (BEVs) – compared to 8.7% for businesses and large fleets. In total, consumers registered 34,324 BEVs in 2020, compared to 73,881 corporate registrations.  Around one in three households have no dedicated off-street parking, leaving them disproportionately dependent on public charging points. SMMT estimates that maintaining the PiCG and similarly exempting consumer electric vehicle purchases from VAT would increase uptake by almost two-thirds by 2026 compared to current predictions."

ITALIAN JOB MINI'S WERE ELECTRIC

In article published on 1st APril: "Remember the Italian Job remake from 2003? The one with Marky Mark and Charlize Theron? Fun fact: to film that movie's underground car scenes, the production team had to make its three R53 Cooper S star cars electric because the city of Los Angeles didn't like the idea of getting fumes all up in its subway tunnels."

THE MOMENT VW DECIDED TO GO 'ALL IN' ON EVS

"In October 2015, a month after the company confessed to rigging diesel cars to conceal illegally high emissions, shellshocked company executives gathered in the brick-clad high-rise executive office building topped with a giant VW logo that looms over the carmaker’s main factory in Wolfsburg, Germany. Herbert Diess, who was then the head of the unit that makes Volkswagen-brand cars and was later promoted to chief executive of the parent company, presided over the meeting. After hours of discussion, he and the other executives decided to shake Volkswagen’s reputation as a cynical polluter by developing cars with no tailpipe emissions at all" writes New YOrk Times: "The financial commitment Volkswagen made then, when sales of electric vehicles were minimal, is paying off now as the company rolls out a line of vehicles developed from the ground up to run on batteries, with more interior space and more appeal than adaptations of gasoline vehicles."
