At over 2.5 hours long there’s plenty to dig into from Elon Musk’s latest interview on Joe Rogan.
MUSK ON...SEMI TRUCK BATTERY
You may remember at the Semi Truck launch, Tesla promised ranges of between 300 and 500 miles, with an efficiency around 2kWh per mile with a full load. It was reasonable to assume the battery would be between 600kWh and 1000kwH (1MWH). Now we have more details on the short range version.
EM: “You want something in the order of probably a 500 kWh pack. What we have in the Model S and X is a 100 kWh pack and probably something like a 500 kWh pack in the Tesla Semi.”
MUSK ON...BILL GATES'S SHORT POSITION
No love lost between these two Billionaires. Bill Gates famously drives an EV, a Porsche Taycan, and has never been overly complimentary about Tesla. He has been doubtful of the Semi truck and the weight that a large battery adds.
EM: "He didn’t know what he was talking about. Probably somebody told him that and he is just not that close to the physics of it. I don’t think he is ill-intentioned here, I just think he doesn’t know what he is talking about. I also heard that at one point he had a large short position. I don’t know if that’s true or not, but it seems weird. People I know who know the situation pretty well, I asked them “are you sure?” and they said “yes, he has a huge short position on Tesla”. That didn’t work out too well."
MUSK ON...CYBERTRUCK
"That’s pretty much what it [the Cybertruck] will look like, with very small differences. You know, we adjusted the size a few percent. Like around 3% or smaller. You don’t want it to be a couple of inches too big for the tunnel" referring to his Boring Tunnels
MUSK ON...MODEL S PLAID
The tri-motor version gets delivered this month.
At the Nurburging: “We’re trying to get to, on the Nurburgring, get to the low-7-minute mark. And then, with further improvements, I think we could bust 7 minutes on the Nurburgring, which would be a pretty wicked act on its own."
MUSK ON...A VAN
"Equipping any of Tesla’s currently-offered vehicles with solar panels would raise the cost of the car exponentially while not giving enough value to drivers who would pay for the feature. The issue is, most passenger vehicles do not have the surface area, or are they driven in the correct climate to make the installation of solar panels an advantageous solution to add driving range. Some have tried this in the past with DIY projects, but it hasn’t resulted in much effectiveness to justify it as an option for Tesla. Now, a van, because you have a big, flat area, that’s actually where solar could start to make a little more sense. You know, because you have a lot of area. You could also have, maybe, a roof where it is solar, and then, when it is stationary, [the roof] goes out and provides shade, and maybe triples your area or something like that. Now, you triple the area, and you have a big, flat surface, you could maybe start charging enough where you start getting like 30 miles a day.”
MUSK ON...ROADSTER HOVERING
"We are going to throw some rocket technology in that car. I want it to hover. We got to figure out how to make it hover without killing people. I thought maybe we could make it hover but not too high. You make it hover like a meter above the ground or something like that. Something where if you plummet, you blow the suspension, but you are not going to die. Maybe 6 feet. You probably just put a height limit on it. You’d go pretty fast, but you are going to be time-limited. It’s going to use a super high-pressure air bottle. The standard version will have a back row with two small seats, like child seats in a Porsche or something, or if you get the SpaceX option package then in that place where those two seats is a high-pressure carbon overwrapped pressure vessel, something at around 10,000 psi, and a bunch of thrusters."
MICROLINO CAR ENTERS PRODUCTION
"The Microlino is a small two-seater electric car that will travel 125-miles on a full charge. It’s specifically designed for city life with the company believing most people don't need anything bigger; Micro states the average car only contains 1.2 people and drives less than 20 miles per day. With space for two adults and whatever you need to carry — Micro specifically states ‘two adults and three beer crates’ — this little car could play a large role in urban mobility. says Green Car Reports: "Production will start this year following the success of a second prototype model. Taking styling cues from the famous BMW Isetta city car from the fifties, it has a front-opening door that allows you to drive forward into a space and exit straight onto the pavement. Able to recharge in just four hours (on a normal home socket), the Microlino will be available with two battery sizes. One that will do 78 miles on a full charge — similar to the Renault Twizy — and one with a range of 125 miles. Its top speed is 56 miles per hour and it’ll cost just 12,000 euros (£10,500)."
LOWER PRICE VW ID.3
The Volkswagen ID.3 Pro is available to order now, bringing the mentry price to £28,670. The Pro electric motor option is available across the ID.3’s Life, Business and Family specifications, and offers a second, 145 PS power output in addition to the introductory 204 PS Pro Performance version. Despite the different motor output to the Pro Performance models, the impressive range of the ID.3 remains the same, with up to 263 miles available on the ID.3 Life Pro from its 58 kWh (net) battery capacity.
The ID.3 Pro’s charging performance remains unchanged, which means that the same speedy 35-minute recharge to 80% capacity at a 100 kW CCS Direct Current charger is achievable.
The saving from Pro Performance to Pro is £29,990 to £28,670
LAST ORDERS FOR POLESTAR 1
"Polestar announced that production of the Polestar 1, its aptly-named first model, will end in late 2021. There are still some build slots available, but the Volvo-owned company will close the order book in the coming months." says Autoblog: "Production started in Chengdu, China, in 2019, and Polestar capped production at 1,500 units. Autoblog learned from a company representative that there about 125 build slots left for the North American market. Polestar is not making any major mechanical modifications to the 1 for 2021, so power comes from a gasoline-electric plug-in hybrid drivetrain built around a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that's both turbocharged and supercharged. It works with a pair of electric motors (one for each rear wheel) that are linked to a 34-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack."

EV DRIVERS HAPPY TO CHARGE WHEN CHEAPER
The UK’s largest trial of smart charging incentives found the majority of electric vehicle drivers on the trial shifted charging to off-peak, reducing demand on the network at the busiest times. The Shift project led by UK Power Networks is partnering with Kaluza, Octopus Energy and ev.energy on the trial involving more than 1,000 domestic customers.
The study also found that as the volume of electric vehicles smart charging grows in a local area, price signals and incentives will need to change to reflect local demand. As a result, networks will need to monitor local network usage and create incentives that encourage the kind of smart charging behaviour that delivers the most value to the network and its whole customer base.

I think the best looking EV in development would be the Rivian’s, I love the interior materials, looks like a lot of high end aluminum and leather. The head lights and tail lights are so cool and futuristic looking, and they didn’t really try to make it that aerodynamic, which doesn’t lead to the most attractive vehicle shapes in my opinion. I think the best looking EV currently available would be Porsche Tuscan Turbo S with the big white wheels, it just looks so mean and fast, great design.

Has to be Tesla. Only car maker that that has put out a car that looks like one of those concept cars that never see the light of day. Gutsy to put out a car with no dashboard and put everything on a single screen. Who else has done that?

Model S is still gorgeous, familiar now but the lines are clean and pure.

I really don't like SUVs so the choice is limited. At the moment I'd pick the Polestar 2, but I'm looking forward to seeing a production Seat/Cupra El-born.
URBAN IN SLOVENIA
For me, the best logging EVs are Porsche Taycan and AUDI e-tron GT, also can't wait for the new Taycan Cross Turismo. I think that legacy automakers have also better build quality and used materials in their vehicles, so that's bringing the overall feel to a higher level.
