Show #989

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 10th February. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

IS THIS THE ID.BUZZ SURF VAN IN DISGUISE?

"Ever since the concept made its debut in Detroit four years ago, we've been anxiously awaiting the production version of the VW ID.Buzz electric minivan. We're getting closer to that moment, as evidenced by these spy photos that show what seems to be an ID.Buzz test mule. It may look like a VW Transporter commercial van at first glance, but closer examination reveals its true nature." says Autoblog: "The first sign that this is not, in fact, a Transporter is the placard on the back where a license plate would go. It reads "elektrofahrzeug" which translates as electric vehicle. Also unusual are the very large fender flares added to the wheel arches. They imply that the ID.Buzz will have a wider track and stance than the Transporter. Then there's the nose that, while very close to the real Transporter, has been shortened. It's expected to be revealed next year and go into production that year."

VOLVO CARS GLOBAL SALES GREW 30.2 PER CENT IN JANUARY

"Starting 2021 on a strong note, Volvo Cars reported the best January in its history as Europe, China and the US all reported increasing sales. The volume of Recharge models more than doubled in January year-on-year, now accounting for 23 per cent of all Volvo cars sold globally."

"European sales for the month increased by 9.0 per cent to 24,857 cars sold, helped by strong performances in key markets such as Sweden, Germany and the Netherlands. Recharge cars amounted to 41 per cent of total European sales.

In January 2021, the XC40 was the company’s top selling model with 17,770 cars (2020: 10,802 units), followed by the XC60 with 17,053 cars (2020: 13,353 units) and the XC90 with sales of 7,564 cars (2020: 6,902 units)."

JEEP WRANGLER EV CONCEPT COMING THIS SPRING

"The Wrangler EV is slowly appearing on the horizon, as Jeep has now confirmed that a concept version of this battery-powered SUV will arrive this spring. A teaser photo on the company's new "The Road Ahead" minisite shows that this new spinoff won't mess with the Wrangler's iconoclastic look despite having an entirely different powertrain underneath. We'll see the full concept this spring as part of the Easter Jeep Safari in late March or early April, and the production model could follow either late this year or early in 2022." reports Car & Driver: "A diagram showing the Wrangler EV's underpinnings shows a single electric motor with a (likely two-speed) transfer case, rather than a dual-motor setup like many other all-wheel-drive EVs use. We spot three, or possibly even four battery modules. It'll still have a body-on-frame setup like the standard Wrangler and the plug-in-hybrid Wrangler 4xe."

GET EXCITED ABOUT AN ALL-ELECTRIC HONDA CB

"A CB EV could be on the way, based on recent patent filings.  Honda details a possible EV bike that is based on its CB125R, which is the smallest-displacement motorcycle in Honda’s Neo-Sports Café range." according to Jalopnik: "The filings seem to build off prior patent applications and have stoked speculation, but other precedents give the CB EV some credibility. Back in 2019 Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha and Kawasaki reportedly agreed to create a consortium that would explore and develop EV tech in moto applications The alleged EV bike looks as if it carries its battery beneath the “gas tank,” which is fitting even if it does raise questions about weight distribution."

TESLA OPERATIONS IN CHINA STALLED BY REGULATORS

"Regulators in China have temporarily thrown a spanner in the works for Tesla (TSLA) operations, as they have questioned quality and safety issues in its Shanghai factory. Five regulators, including the country’s top market regulator, cyberspace watchdog and transportation authority, summoned the electric carmaker following complaints about abnormal acceleration and battery fires, according to a statement released on Monday." says Yahoo Finance: "In response, Tesla posted a statement on Chinese microblogging platform Webo on Monday, saying: “At present, the company is strengthening internal working mechanisms and processes under the guidance of the competent government departments, and strengthening internal management in all aspects. “For the problems reported by consumers, we will systematically investigate, effectively implement the protection of consumer rights and interests, further implement the main responsibility of corporate quality and safety, effectively maintain social public safety, and better contribute to the healthy and healthy development of China's new energy vehicle market in the future.”"

TESLA MODEL YS SPOTTED AT PORT OF BELGIUM IN EUROPE AS GIGA BERLIN PRODUCTION NEARS

"Recently, five Tesla Model Ys were spotted in Belgium, which generated a lot of interest. The cars were shipped from the USA and will be used by the company." said Tesmanian: "Twitter user @EstherKokkelman shared a photo showing five Model Ys, although there may have been more. The caption to the photo indicated that the vehicles were in Zeebrugge, Belgium. According to @mortenlund89/Twitter, the first Tesla ship in Q1 2021 arrived at Zeebrugge on February 8. Glovis Captain, which departed from San Francisco, USA, delivered Tesla Model 3 vehicles for Europe, but a few Model Ys were among them, according to the photos."

@Jaguar: "We're delighted to announce that global chauffeur service @Blacklane has acquired a majority stake in #Havn, London’s all-electric chauffeur service powered by #Jaguar #IPACE and the #JaguarLandRover mobility services arm @InMotionVC"

"With this deal, Berlin-based Blacklane, which operates in more than 300 cities in 50 countries, will add Havn’s all-electric Jaguar I-PACE performance SUVs to its global fleet. App-based ride-hailing service Havn was launched in September 2019 by Jaguar Land Rover’s venture capital and mobility services unit, InMotion." reports Reuters: "Global ride-hailing service firms including Uber Technologies Inc and Lyft are increasingly electrifying their fleets, following years of criticism by environmental groups and authorities over the pollution and congestion caused by their vehicles."

KIA'S LONG TERM EV PLAN

"Kia announced an update to its ‘Plan S’ strategy for its future business at the 2021 CEO Investor Day, held digitally today in Seoul. The ambitious update to its mid- to long-term roadmap was presented by Ho Sung Song, President and CEO of Kia Corporation."

"By 2030, eco-friendly vehicles such as EVs, HEVs and PHEVs will make up 40 per cent of all sales for Kia, with an annual sales target of 1.6 million units. As part of this, Kia aims to grow EV sales to 880,000 units in 2030 and become a top global seller. Starting with the launch of its first dedicated EV later this year, Kia will strengthen its EV lineup by 2026 with 11 new models – seven dedicated EVs built on the Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) architecture, and four based on existing ICE derivatives."

PORSCHE ANNOUNCES NEW CAYENNE SERIES MANAGER

"Porsche has found a replacement for Cayenne series manager Manfred Harrer, who left for Apple to work on Project Titan. Stefan Weckbach used to be the chief developer of the Taycan electric model and will now take over responsibility for the large SUV series." according to electrive: "Porsche has recently been more than satisfied with the launch of the Taycan: In 2020, the company based in the German city of Zuffenhausen was able to deliver 20,015 units of the Taycan built at its main plant. Last summer, Porsche even had to borrow 400 employees from Audi’s Neckarsulm plant to better meet the high demand for the electric sedan."

CONTINENTAL: COVID MAY SPARK CHINA EV SURGE

"A Continental survey has revealed that while personal vehicle use has increased in China during Covid-19, this could lead to a boost for electric mobility.  In cooperation with social research institute Infras, the Continental Mobility Study 2020 quizzed people in France, the US, Japan, China and Germany on their mobility habits. More than 45% of respondents in China said they use their car more often because of the coronavirus pandemic – almost twice as high as the figure in Germany (23%)." says ItsInternational.com: "Other findings show that the lack of charging stations is the most cited argument against EVs in four out the five countries in the study. Only in France is the price the most discouraging factor."
