TESLA Q4 2020 VEHICLE PRODUCTION & DELIVERY REPORT

PRESS RELEASE

Q4 Numbers and 2020 Year

"In 2020, we produced and delivered half a million vehicles, in line with our most recent guidance. In addition, Model Y production in Shanghai has begun, with deliveries expected to begin shortly."

Q4 2020

Production         Deliveries           Subject to operating lease accounting

Model S/X          16,097                 18,920                 11%

Model 3/Y          163,660              161,650              7%

Total                    179,757              180,570              8%

2020

                             Production         Deliveries

Model S/X          54,805                 57,039

Model 3/Y          454,932              442,511

Total                    509,737              499,550

"Our delivery count should be viewed as slightly conservative, as we only count a car as delivered if it is transferred to the customer and all paperwork is correct. Final numbers could vary by up to 0.5% or more. "

YoY growth of 36%.

"When Tesla announced its fourth-quarter results for 2019 on January 29, management set a target for full-year deliveries of 500,000 vehicles. This would translate to about 36% year-over-year growth compared to the approximately 368,000 vehicles Tesla delivered in 2019." reported nasdaq.com: "But what management didn't know was that the world was about to get hit with a pandemic that would lead to unprecedented lockdowns, including temporary shutdowns at the company's factory in both Shanghai and the U.S. Indeed, Tesla's main vehicle manufacturing factory in California would end up being shut down for about half of Q2."

What's the split of 3 & Y? Tesla don't publish.

PRODUCTION CAPACITY

As per Tesla: ""We have recently increased capacity of Model 3 / Model Y to 500,000 units a year. In order to do this, we restarted our second paint shop, installed the largest diecasting machine in the world and upgraded our Model Y general assembly line. Production should reach full capacity toward the end of this year or beginning of next year. ...Model Y in Fremont expected to reach capacity-level production soon. Our most recent capacity expansion investments are now stabilizing with Model 3 in Shanghai achieving its designed production rate. Model 3 production capacity has increased to 250,000 units a year."

Fremont, California

Model S/X 90,000

Model 3/Y 500,000

Shanghai, China

Model 3 (capacity of up to 250,000 annually / 5,000 per week, at three shifts (increased from 200,000 / 4,000 per week previously, and 150,000 / 3,000 per week initially), Model 3 since late 2019

Model Y (initially expected capacity of 150,000 annually, probably will be similar to Model 3), from 2021

Total 840,000 at the end of Q4 2020 not including MY in China. 210,000 a quarter. So they're close to production limit. That's important to note because Tesla fanatics tell you they sell every car they can make, and Tesla haters like to point out they have more installed capacity than they can use.

TESLA BY REGION FOR 2020

Whilst these are only estimates, those who track the numbers suggest:

US - ~205,000 deliveries

China ~150,000 deliveries

Europe ~100,000 deliveries

Asia-Pacidic ~30,000

Canada ~22,000

XPENG DEPLOYS LIDAR TECHNOLOGY

Xpeng Inc. (“Xpeng” or the “Company”, NYSE: XPEV), a leading Chinese smart electric vehicle (“Smart EV”) company, has collaborated with Livox, a leading lidar maker, to deploy its automotive-grade lidar technology in Xpeng’s new production model in 2021. Livox is Xpeng’s first partner in lidar technology.

Xpeng’s new 2021 production model will be the world's first mass-produced smart EVs equipped with lidar, solidifying Xpeng’s cutting-edge position in the smart EV technology.

The addition of lidar effectively improves the vehicle’s high-precision recognition performance, significantly enhancing the entire vehicle’s perception capabilities, particularly the accuracy and spatial resolution in the horizontal and vertical axes, enhancing the ability to avoid pedestrians and static obstacles. Coupled with lidar’s ability to monitor small obstacles regardless of ambient light levels, this can provide greater safety redundancy for ADAS functions.

Xpeng’s autonomous driving platform already integrates camera, millimeter-wave radar, ultrasonic and other sensors. The addition of lidar will not only provide a greater level of safety redundancy, by allowing more accurate imaging of the road situation, but will also enhance target detection, measurement accuracy, performance in low ambient light and other challenging perception condition

GM TO SHOW OFF ELECTRIFIED VEHICLES AT CES 2021

"CES 2021 is going to be very different from past years. Rather than hordes of technology fans and journalists showing up in Las Vegas in person, the entire event will be held online. A new report has surfaced that General Motors CEO Mary Barra will give the opening keynote address on January 12 for the show. During her keynote, she will reportedly provide a peek at coming electric vehicles." reports SlashGear: "One of the GM concept vehicles that will reportedly be unveiled at CES is a plug-in Chevrolet pickup. It’s unclear if that pickup will be a plug-in hybrid or fully electric. GM will also be showing off electrified Cadillac models and electric vehicles for its other brands. GM President Mark Reuss also speak at CES about the automaker’s electric vehicle strategy."

CHINA TO CUT NEW ENERGY VEHICLE SUBSIDIES

" China will cut its subsidies on new energy vehicles (NEVs) such as electric cars by up to 20% next year, the finance ministry said on December 31, as Beijing seeks to boost fuel economy and cultivate home-grown automotive sector champions." writes Asia Times FInancial: "China has set a target for NEVs, which also cover plug-in hybrids and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, to account for a fifth of auto sales by 2025 compared with the current 5%. According to a statement posted on the finance ministry website, subsidies for NEVs in public transport, sanitation, postal services, logistics and civil aviation airports, among others, will be cut by only 10% compared with the 2020 level. Other areas will face a 20% subsidy cut. The proportion of NEVs in the sales of new vehicles is expected to rise to 20% by 2025, and vehicles used in public transport will be completely electrified by 2035, according to the plan."

REPORT CLAIMS NISSAN PLANS TO SCALE BACK ITS SALES NETWORK IN EUROPE

"Nissan will be reducing its presence in Europe even further but its UK network will remain one of its target markets, according to reports in a Japanese newspaper.  Publication Yomiuri revealed it had been informed by an unnamed source that the car maker will be scaling back its efforts in Europe although it will continue to sell cars through its Renault network." sais Car Dealer Magazine: "The areas that will be hit by this are largely in Eastern Europe, with thirty countries expected to see a reduction from the brand. In Europe, it says Nissan’s target markets will be the UK, Germany, Spain and Italy and parts of Northern Europe where its electric vehicles have been widely adopted. The article added that Nissan plans to close its Avila plant in Spain, after the Barcelona closure was delayed to December this year, and there is no mention of the UK Sunderland plant."
