Show #941

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 2nd December. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

TESLA MODELS S & X GET PRICIER IN EUROPE

"Tesla has increased prices significantly for the next European batch of Model S and Model X vehicles. It is sparking rumors of a refresh." says electrek: "Tesla owners across Europe are reporting that the automaker updated its online configurator with an important price increase across the board. Model 3 is seeing a smaller price increase between €500 to €1,000, but Model S and Model X are seeing much larger price increases. Prices vary in different markets, but the price of both vehicles is roughly €5,000 ($6,000 USD) more expensive after the update. In Germany, the Model S now starts about €82,000 or the equivalent of $98,000 USD."

These are cars arriving March 2021.  Could it be 4680 cells from pilot line? Surely not. But the numbers of sales of S & X are small enough.

17,000 combined in Q3 produced. 1,700,000kWH of cells. That's 1.7GWh of batteries a quarter. Pilot line will run 10GWh but be used to make Model Y in Berlin. So, unlikely. Plus long term battery supply contracts with Panasonic for the 18650 cells.

More likely a cosmetic refresh to bring in line some of the supply chains and commonality of parts used across the range. And I'd love to see them more premium.

REUTERS EXCLUSIVE: LG CHEM TO DOUBLE CHINA BATTERY CAPACITY

"South Korea’s LG Chem Ltd plans to more than double production capacity of battery cells it makes in China for Tesla Inc electric vehicles (EV) next year, sources said, to keep up with its U.S. client’s growth in the biggest car market." reports Reuters: "The firm, a supplier for Tesla’s Shanghai-built Model 3, will also ship its increased output from China as well as Korea to Tesla’s factories in Germany and the United States, said two people with knowledge of the matter, signalling an increased role in the supply chain of the world’s leading EV manufacturer. The plan comes as Tesla, LG Chem’s primary customer, scrambles to secure cells as part of an aggressive global production expansion plan, as it targets soaring demand fanned by governments promoting EVs to curb air pollution. LG Chem has already added production lines in South Korea this year mainly to meet demand from Tesla’s U.S. plant, the people said. Moreover, the automaker has asked Japan’s Panasonic Corp - which supplies the U.S. plant"

Annual capacity could be running at 250,000 Model Y a year by the end of 2021. This new production from LG, and their 17 production lines in Nanjing, could make enough cells for 323,000 MOdel Y's.

BERLIN MODEL Y MIGHT NOT BE ONLY 4680 CELLS.

From the same report: "LG Chem’s China factory will also initially supply battery cells for Tesla vehicles in Berlin when production there begins, the person said. The automaker needs permission should it want to make its own cells locally."

TESLA SUPERCHARGER NETWORK COULD BE OPENED TO OTHER EV BRANDS IN CHINA

"Tesla China VP Grace Tao recently shared a rather interesting update on the electric car maker’s Supercharger ramp in the country. While speaking at an online forum, the executive remarked that Tesla China is open to the idea of opening up its Supercharger Network to other electric car makers in the country" according to Teslarati:"If Tesla opens its Supercharger Network to other carmakers in China, Tao noted that the non-Tesla EVs would have to be certified first. She did not announce a timeframe for such a project, though her remarks do come on the heels of an announcement about a Supercharger plant in the country. "

NEW HYUNDAI E-GMP PLATFORM

Hyundai Motor Group reveals E-GMP, its first dedicated BEV platform, for next-generation BEV line-up

BEVs based on E-GMP can provide range over 500km on a full charge (WLTP) and be charged up to 80% within 18 minutes through high-speed charging

Components optimize driving dynamics and safety, and maximize cabin space

Integrated Power Electric system includes world's first multi-charging (400V/800V) and bi-directional power conversion function

Platform modularization and standardization enable rapid and flexible development depending on customer needs

Maximizing development flexibility through modularization and standardization

Hyundai Motor Group plans to introduce 23 BEV models and sell 1 million BEV units worldwide by 2025

"Unlike previous BEVs, which only accept one-way charging, the E-GMP's charging system is more flexible. The E-GMP's newly developed Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU) enables a new vehicle-to-load (V2L) function, which can additionally discharge energy from the vehicle battery without additional components."

FORD MUSTANG MACH-E GT PERFORMANCE EDITION

"Based on the GT trim, the Performance Edition is powered by two electric motors that make 480 horsepower and a pickup-like 634 pound-feet of torque. For comparison, the regular Mach-E GT posts 480 and 600, respectively. Those figures lower its zero-to-60-mph time to 3.5 seconds" says Autoblog: "Performance Edition gains 19-inch front rotors gripped by Brembo calipers, a sportier MagneRide suspension also offered on the two-door Mustang, a specific gray grille, and 20-inch wheels painted black. Inside, the passengers are treated to front sport seats and aluminum-look trim on the dashboard. The GT starts at $62,700 before government incentives."

VOLKSWAGEN CEASES MOTORSPORT TO SPEND ON EVS

"The German manufacturer decided last year to cease factory support of all programmes using an internal combustion engine, instead putting a "clear emphasis on fully electric racing cars". However, a day after Audi went public with its decision to quit Formula E as a works entry at the end of the 2020/21 season, VW has now canned all of its motorsport projects." says MOtor1: "According to a statement, this move comes as "part of the company's realignment". The 169 employers of the VW Motorsport GmbH division will be integrated into the wider Volkswagen AG networ"

FORD TO CONVERT COLOGNE FACTORY FOR MEB BASED EV PRODUCTION

"Ford recently selected its factory in Köln, known to English speakers as Cologne, to produce the first Ford branded electric car to use the MEB chassis." says CleanTechnica: "The plan is to launch the MEB based vehicle in 2023. Over the next several years, Ford expects to deliver more than 600,000 examples of the car, which will “combine generous space with the advantages of an electric drive,” according to the company. In fact, there may be a second MEB based vehicle in the works. A report by Handelsblatt from last year quoted Stuart Rowley, head of Ford Europe as saying, “Yes, we are talking about it.” From an economic point of view, he said, it would not make sense to produce just one car on the MEB chassis."
