Show #883

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 4th September 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

TESLA SHARES FALL AFTER STOCK WAS NOT ADDED TO THE S&P 500

"After showing a fourth straight quarter of profitability, many assumed Tesla Inc (NASDAQ: TSLA) would be added to the S&P 500. After hitting this milestone, the electric vehicle maker qualified for entry into the index of the United State's 500 largest companies." reportd Yahoo! Finance: "After the S&P 500 added Etsy Inc. (NASDAQ: ETSY), Teradyne Inc (NASDAQ: TER) and Catalent (NYSE: CTLT) on Friday evening, the lack of a Tesla announcement sent shares sinking. Meeting qualifications does not automatically mean a company will be added to the index, as a committee makes the final decision on which stocks to add each month. Many assumed Tesla would be added to the S&P 500 index. The company is currently one of the top 10 largest in the U.S. based on market cap. While it won't affect day to day operations, it will hurt the share price."

CNBC points out: "Even if a company meets these criteria as well as the other stipulations, that does not guarantee inclusion in the index. The committee meets on a quarterly basis to rebalance the index, but companies can be added or removed from the S&P at any time."

ELON MUSK MEETS WITH VW CEO

"Elon Musk had a special meeting with VW CEO Hebert Diess where he got a preview of the ID.3 and ID.4 electric cars. As we have been reporting over the last few days, Musk has been in Germany to visit a few projects related to Tesla." says Electrek: "A VW official confirmed the meeting between the two CEOs, but they didn’t elaborate on the nature of it. Tesla’s CEO was also apparently given a preview of the ID.3 and the ID.4 electric vehicles at the airport. Musk and Diess both had good things to say about each other in the past. Just hours before the meeting, Musk told fans outside Gigafactory Berlin that he thought Volkswagen was doing a lot for electrification."

Handelsblatt reported: “When Elon Musk’s private jet, the “Gulfstream G650”, took off from Berlin-Schönefeld Airport on Wednesday at 9:17 pm, everyone thought: The Tesla boss’s visit to Germany is over. But only 26 minutes later the plane landed at Braunschweig Airport. The reason for the stopover was a visit to VW boss Herbert Diess.”

VOLKSWAGEN ID.4 EV INTERIOR: SCREENS AND TOUCH-SENSITIVITY

"The reveal of the Volkswagen ID.4, the first member of VW's new family of battery-powered vehicles slated to come to the U.S., is getting closer. Before we see the exterior of the crossover EV later this month, Volkswagen is giving us a preview of the interior. Naturally, screens feature prominently, but the most notable characteristic may be the wholesale embrace of touch-sensitivity." according to Autoblog: "The images show a large freestanding center screen that is able to display multiple functions at once — in this case, navigation, audio, and phone, along with what may be an equalizer. Another image shows that the central display has three pages of menus. The center screen dwarfs the instrument cluster, which is another screen. Contained within the image of the instrument cluster, by the way, is a rendering of the ID.4 that gives us our best look yet at the exterior of the vehicle in its production form. Extending from the right of the cluster screen is a trapezoidal-shaped knob that functions as the gearshift. Touch the end of the knob to actuate the parking brake. The parking brake button appears to be touch-sensitive, as are all the buttons we can see in these pictures"

UK IN AUGUST – 9.75% ELECTRIC VEHICLE MARKET SHARE

"The UK saw 9.75% plugin electric vehicle market share in August 2020, up from 4.4% in August 2019. Year to date plugin share now stands at 8.2%. The overall auto market was down 5.8% compared to a year ago, at just over 87,000 units." writes Dr Max Holland for CleanTechnica: "The 9.75% August result was weighted strongly in favour of full battery electric vehicles (BEVs) over plug in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs), with market shares of 6.4% and 3.3% respectively. This was quite a significant change in weighing from the cumulative year-to-date shares of 4.9% BEV versus 3.3% PHEV. We can see that the Tesla Model 3, Nissan LEAF, MG ZS EV, Jaguar I-Pace and Renault Zoe were the most popular BEVs, all selling over 2000 units in the first half of the year. The BMW 330e and the Mitsubishi Outlander were highest selling PHEVs. The MG ZS EV deserves a shout out for grabbing the 3rd place spot for BEVs in its first full year of availability – a great achievement. Notably, the Tesla Model 3 was by far the most popular UK plugin in the first half of the year, outselling the next 4 BEVs combined."

BMW I3 PRODUCTION WILL BE INCREASED IN ORDER TO MEET DEMAND

"BMW is probably not developing a direct replacement for the i3 electric car, so when it goes out of production, it will most likely remain a unique one-off model in the company’s history. But its merits go beyond its quirky, boxy looks and the fact that it’s electric - it’s actually one of BMW’s recent success stories." says InsideEVs: "The i3 debuted in September of 2013 and at the time it quickly became the world’s second best selling EV, after the Nissan Leaf, then it dropped to third position where it stayed between 2014 and 2016. So the i3 has been in production for almost seven years now and it has surprisingly remained unwaveringly popular. The United States is its best selling market, where around 50,000 examples have been delivered in total since it was launched. Total global sales exceeded 165,000 at the start of 2020 and according to some recent information, the figure will keep growing because the i3 is still in very high demand around the world."

VOLTA ZERO LAUNCHED

"Volta Trucks has launched the Zero, the world's first purpose-built pure-electric 16-tonne commercial vehicle. With a range of between 95 - 125 miles on a charge, the Volta Zero is targeted at 'last mile' deliveries, particularly in urban areas. Fitted with a battery of between 160 to 200 kWh, the Volta Zero is likely to be built in the UK, with full production due to start in 2022. By the end of 2020, the Swedish firm expects the first prototype to be built, with test vehicles due to start trials with customers early next year." says Next Green Car: "Designed to be capable of operating in narrow city streets, the Volta Zero aims to undertake the role that three or four 3.5-tonne vehicles would normally do - reducing congestion and emissions. With a payload of 8,600 kg and an overall volume of 37.7 m3, the Volta Zero is designed to accommodate 16 Euro pallets. A refrigerated cargo box will also be available, which uses the vehicle's battery for operation."

ŠKODA AUTO INVESTS 32 MILLION EUROS IN ENYAQ IV PRODUCTION LINE AT ITS MLADÁ BOLESLAV PLANT

ŠKODA AUTO has now completed the conversion of an existing production line at its main factory in Mladá Boleslav for MEB vehicles, which has been in progress since last summer. This work included structural changes to the building as well as modifications to the conveyor technology and final assembly line. Investments made amount to 32 million euros. It is now the only line in the entire Volkswagen Group on which vehicles based on the MEB modular electric car platform and the MQB modular transverse matrix can be built alongside one another. This means that the all-electric ŠKODA ENYAQ iV1, the OCTAVIA2 and the KAROQ3 compact SUV all roll off the same production line at the Mladá Boleslav plant.
