Show #836

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Saturday 11th June 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

TESLA ANNOUNCES DATE FOR 'BATTERY DAY' AND ANNUAL SHAREHOLDER MEET

"Tesla announced that the 2020 Annual Shareholder Meeting and the long-awaited Battery Day will be both held on Tuesday, September 22, 2020. The 2020 Annual Meeting will be held "in person on Tuesday, September 22, 2020, at 2:30 p.m. Pacific Time, at Tesla’s Fremont Factory located at 45500 Fremont Blvd, Fremont, CA 94538"." says InsideEVs: "The Battery Day presentation is a separate event for eligible stockholders, scheduled for the same day, although details were not yet announced. Both events will be livestreamed. As many expect bold announcements about Tesla's groundbreaking battery tech, it could be one of the most important presentations to date. Whether those will be more energy-dense batteries, more affordable batteries or longer-lasting batteries for 1 million miles (1.6 million km), we have to wait until September 22 to find out."

TESLA REDUCES MODEL Y PRICES, NOW STARTS BELOW $50,000

"Tesla has lowered the price of another vehicle. This time it’s the Model Y, an electric SUV the company started shipping in March. The long-range all-wheel drive version of the car is now listed with a purchase price of $49,990, or $3,000 less than what it was before. " reports Tech Crunch. And Electrek reported: "Since its launch, Model Y has only been offered in two versions: Long Range Dual Motor AWD and Performance. However, the Performance version was available with or without a “Performance Package” that adds several features: Increased top speed from 145mph to 155mph, 21’’ Überturbine Wheels, Performance Brakes, Lowered suspension, Aluminum alloy pedals, With the update today, Tesla is now making the package standard on Model Y Performance orders — now starting just below $60,000. Now the same version of the Model 3 is only $3,000 less expensive than the Model Y."

Will there ever be a Model Y Standard Range Plus? M3 has 250 miles.

Model 3 is $47k (£47k) and $55k (£56.5). Model Y is $50k and $60k.

And for fun, Model S is $75k and $95k and Model X is $80k and $100K

HANKOOK DEVELOPS TIRE FOR ALL-ELECTRIC PORSCHE SPORTS CAR

"Hankook Tire America Corp. will equip the first all-electric sports car from Porsche — the Taycan — with its Ventus S1 evo 3 ev tires. The Porsche Taycan will be fitted with size 225/55R19 XL 103Y tires on the front axle, and 275/45R19 XL 108Y tires on the rear axle. Hankook says the Ventus S1 evo 3 ev tires, which will bear the Porsche NF0 symbol on the sidewall, contain a lot of technical refinements for the electronic sports car." reports ModernTireDealer.com: "Hankook says the tread pattern of the Ventus S1 evo 3 was adapted in the ev version for Porsche to reduce specific tire noise detectible due to the absence of the engine noise. To meet the extra demand of the high performance of the electric sports car, the tire's bead was reinforced with so-called bead-packing technology, as well as high lateral stiffness for precise handling even at high speeds. As a result, Hankook says the Ventus S1 evo 3 ev achieves 30% greater durability compared to a standard tread compound. Abrasion resistance was improved by 5% compared to the conventional model and rolling resistance was improved by 13% overall, the company sai"

2021 SKODA ENYAQ IV SPIED TESTING WITH A TRAILER

"In October last year, we caught an early test mule of Skoda’s first all-electric sport utility vehicle. A few months later, the Czech automaker confirmed it’ll be named Enyaq iV and we started seeing prototypes with production bodies testing on public roads from March this year. Today, we have a new spy video of the EV to share, showing at least three different test cars." reports Motor1.com: "First, we see a heavily disguised vehicle being carefully unloaded from a truck and then taking on a test route somewhere in the Alps. It’s towing a two-axle trailer .  The Enyaq iV will be heavily based on the Volkswagen ID.4 with the two sharing basically everything that’s underneath the body. Still, the two vehicles should be easy to differentiate as we expect the Czech model to get its own individual design on the outside."

RENAULT'S FIRST 16-TON ELECTRIC FREIGHT TRUCK

"Renault has been testing prototype electric delivery trucks since 2017, and this 16-ton behemoth has finally reached the production stage. The D-series of Renault trucks can be retrofitted for all kinds of work, including refrigerated trucking like this one, a standard box truck, or a garbage collector. Renault claims that the electric D is capable of around 75 miles of range during waste collection operation, which should be more than enough." says Jalopnik: "If all of the current diesel short-range delivery and trash collection trucks were slowly phased out for electric trucks like this one, not only would city centers experience improved air quality, but noise pollution would also decrease."

TESLA GIGAFACTORY 3 ALREADY PRODUCED ABOUT 50,000 MODEL 3

"According to the latest news from China, the total production of Tesla Model 3 at the Tesla Gigafactory 3 in Shanghai, China amounted ao bout 50,000 units. The data provided by Moneyball, shows 49,799 Made-in-China (MIC) Model 3 produced in the first half of the year (a small number was produced also in December 2019)." says InsideEVs: "This actually makes Tesla the biggest manufacturer of electric cars (and plug-in cars in general) in China. The second best BYD produced a little over 40,000, although that's for over 10 models. No other single model was even close to 20,000, as 2nd best GAC Aion S was at 15,617."

STUDY: EVS PUT TO USE IN RIDE-HAILING DELIVER MORE CARBON BENEFITS THAN IN PERSONAL USE

"Electric cars could deliver even greater environmental benefits if they were to be used by ride-hailing services like Uber and Lyft than if they were to go to private use, according to a new study from the University of California, Davis." writes Green Car Reports: "Replacing a gasoline ride-hailing vehicle with an EV can deliver three times the carbon reduction of a personally-owned electric car, according to the study. That's because ride-hailing vehicles travel more miles than personal cars, according to the study. They also typically charge during the day, when a greater quality of solar energy is fed into the grid, the study noted. As previous studies have shown, electric cars get cleaner along with the grid electricity used to charge them. Companies and regulators are already taking steps to make ride-hailing electric. Based on Uber and Lyft travel and charging data in California during 2017 and 2018, the study found highlighted that many ride-hailing drivers are already going electric. While electric cars made up a "tiny fraction of traffic," ride-hailing EVs accounted for more than 30% of energy use at public charging stations, according to the study."

AUTOPILOT SIDE CAMERAS TO SHOW BLIND SPOTS

Australian Tesla Owners

@AusTeslaOwners

Elon, can we get the side repeater cameras to show full screen when indicating please?

Elon Musk

@elonmusk

Sure

"In a recent software update, the company gave owners the ability to see the view out of those cameras, which allowed drivers to see their blind spot on the car's large center screen. But, the view from these cameras was smaller than the rearview. So the new update will allow to automatically make the side repeater camera fullscreen whenever the driver signals a turn or lane change, which will certainly become a very useful feature." says tesmanian
