Show #778

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 14th May 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

NEW 2021 ELECTRIC KIA SUV - PORSCHE PACE FOR PEUGEOT MONEY

"Kia has confirmed it will launch an all-new electric crossover next year, based on the Imagine concept first seen at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. Internally known as the Kia CV, it will act as the brand’s halo model and introduce next-generation charging technology and an all-new platform made specifically for electric vehicles." writes AutoExpress: "It will be the first production vehicle built on the Hyundai Group’s brand-new E-GMP dedicated electric underpinnings .The crossover will also take advantage of Kia’s recent tie-up with electric expert Rimac to offer “incredible” performance, which will later trickle down to more mainstream models in Kia’s line-up."

But how incredible?

300 miles range

Recharge in 20 mins

800 volt architecture

Make the most of new 350kW chargers

e-GT will deliver 0-62 in less than 3 seconds.

AUDI TT E-TRON: ONCE MORE, WITH FEELING

"Still several years out, the reborn TT will fill a sporty niche in an Audi lineup rapidly embracing electrification. Like the gas-powered TT, the electric TT will use a common Volkswagen Group platform designed for consumer vehicles, not luxury cars, per se. Built on the MEB electric vehicle platform, the TT E-Tron—as it will likely be called given Audi's electric naming convention—will lean on styling, performance, and a fancy, high-tech interior to separate it from more pedestrian vehicles built on the same hardware." according to MotorTrend: "expect the TT E-Tron to come with standard all-wheel drive and Quattro badging. Unlike most other MEB models, the TT E-Tron is expected to offer a convertible variant. With product plans in flux across the industry right now, we hope to see the TT E-Tron in 2023. Given the cost of EV batteries and its niche market, we think the base price will climb from $46,000 today to at least $50,000 (more for the convertible when it eventually reaches the market)."

PEUGEOT 208 GTI GOES ELECTRIC

"Bosses in Paris are adamant they can keep the sporting GTI flame alive, but add battery power to stymie emissions and the threat of crippling corporate fines if their CO2 emissions miss the tough new 95g/km EU target." says Phil McNamara, Editor-In-Chief of Car Magazine: "In the new June 2020 issue of CAR magazine, Jean-Philippe Imparato, executive vice-president of Peugeot, admitted: ‘GTI is nonsense for me. There is one way to say it simply: Peugeot Sport. That means high performance, low emissions, new sensations. If I offer a B-segment performance car, it will be a full EV [electric vehicle] – that’s obvious. We will decide by the end of 2020, more or less.’The Peugeot Sport sub-brand will all be electrified. Plug-in hybrid, non-Sport versions of the 508, 3008 and 5008 are hitting dealers and it won’t be long until the first official Peugeot Sport car is revealed – the circa-300bhp, all-wheel-drive hybrid 508 Peugeot Sport. After the 208, Peugeot has to decide on a plan for the hot version of the next-generation 308."

BYD TO LAUNCH IN EUROPE THIS YEAR

"Only a few days after announcing its entry into the electric passenger car market through Norway, BYD has now also arranged the distribution: RSA will be the sole distributor of BYD’s electric vehicles in Norway and as such will also be responsible for service and spare parts. " says Electrive: "The agreement also includes the sales of electric vans and trucks. Models include the above mentioned BYD Tang eSUV, a panel van, a 7.5-tonne and 19-tonne rigid truck and a yard tractor."

ELECTRIC CARS TAKE THE SPOTLIGHT IN CHINA’S

"As China tries to recover from the impact of the coronavirus, making sure its plans for electric vehicles stay on track is one priority." reports CNBC: "In the last few weeks, NEV subsidies and tax break policies set to expire this year were extended by two years to 2022. Battery charging infrastructure – frequently cited as a reason for not buying an electric car – got an injection of 2.7 billion yuan. That would allow for a ten-fold increase in scale versus last year, according to state media. China also aims to increase the share of new energy vehicles in the market to a quarter in the next five years, up from just 5% last year"

SAMSUNG AND HYUNDAI LEADERS MEET FOR COLLABORATION IN ELECTRIC CARS

"The top bosses of Samsung and Hyundai have met to discuss a potential collaboration in electric cars, the companies have confirmed." reports ZDNet: "The two parties discussed next-generation battery technologies and shared their respective research and development statuses in the area, a Hyundai Motor Group spokesman said.A Samsung spokesman said the conglomerate's all-solid-state batteries were structurally sturdy and stable, adding that the company hopes for expanded collaboration between the two business groups in the mobility sector. Samsung SDI currently doesn't supply car batteries to Hyundai with the latter currently obtaining the majority of its supplies from LG Chem and SK Innovation."

WPD UPDATES EV STRATEGY

"Western Power Distribution (WPD) has released its updated EV strategy as it outlines measures to help support the rollout" says Current News, talking about the UK DNO: "It is also working with Moto Services on plans for a trial at one of its motorway service areas to deliver rapid charging using “new technology that requires significantly less space than current chargers”. This year, it expects to amend design policies to standardise three phase service cables, as well as creating a design specification for bespoke charging transformer deployments following the completion of its hub charging project. The DNO also pointed to fleet electrification, stating it envisions a number of possible solutions for depot charging, from requiring a large electricity supply to using off peak charging."

TESLA OWNER REMOTELY LOCKS CARJACKING SUSPECT INSIDE THE VEHICLE

"A Tesla owner helped Barstow police make an arrest after using the remote start function to lock a carjacking suspect inside the vehicle." says Victor Valley News: "The suspect made the victim get out of his vehicle and then attempted to steal it. “The victim stated that he was able to use his cellular phone to turn the vehicle’s engine off and lock the subject inside of the vehicle,” stated the release. Arriving officers located Smith in the driver’s seat of the vehicle and placed him under arrest, officials said."

A few things wrong with this story:

There is no engine, and you can't turn off the electric motor from the app. But the car does need the phone inside to drive it, if you put a Tesla into park and then try to drive off again. You can't permanently lock someone inside a Tesla, but you can lock the doors, I think you can still disable the handle pull. And the suspect might not have been able to find the emergency button to open the door on the Model 3.
