Show #759

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Saturday 25th April 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.

TESLA ROLLS OUT AUTOPILOT NAVIGATION FOR TRAFFIC LIGHTS AND STOP SIGNS

"Tesla has been developing Autopilot navigation for traffic lights and stop signs for quite some time, and now the feature is finally ready for the public. According to Electrek, the automaker has released a Traffic Light and Stop Sign Control feature for its Autopilot technology as part of the 2020.12.6 software update." says Yahoo News: "The update’s release note says the feature, which is still in beta, will give Tesla vehicles the power to recognize traffic lights even when they’re off and to automatically slow down at intersections. Drivers will get notification when the car intends to slow down, and the vehicle will stop at the red line shown on the onscreen driving visual. They’ll then have to push down the gear selector or press the accelerator to confirm that it’s safe to proceed."

TESLA PATENTS A NEW NCA ELECTRODE FOR ITS EV BATTERIES

"Tesla has patented a new type of electrode to be used inside of the battery cells that builds in house. The goal of the new battery electrodes is to be longer-lasting and cheaper to produce. The new NCA electrode in the patent is expected to be used in those battery cells." according to TweakTown.com: "Tesla previously patented an electrode using a new generation "single-crystal" NMC 532 cathode and a new advanced electrolyte. The team was able to show over 4000 cycles in battery cells made using the novel cathode. Tesla believes that the battery cells could last for over a million miles when used in electric vehicles."

TESLA MODEL 3 CONFIGURATION IN CHINA EXPANDS WITH MORE INTERIOR OPTIONS

"Tesla China has released the white seating option for its Model 3. Previously, the electric sedan was only available with black seats for Chinese buyers." reports Teslartati: "Tesla officially made its white seating option available on April 23. The upgrade costs ¥8,000, or USD 1,132. The price of the upgrade is roughly the same as what’s priced in the U.S. at $1,000. The interior option is available for all three of the MIC Model 3 configurations: the Rear-Wheel Drive Standard Range+, the Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive, and the Dual Motor All-Wheel Drive Performance."

EUROPE BEATS CHINA IN EV SALES, STUDY SHOWS

"Europe's five largest automotive markets edged past China in electric vehicle registrations in the first quarter of 2020, as China battled the outbreak of the coronavirus and imposed shutdowns countrywide, according to a study by PwC and its strategy consulting subsidiary Strategy&." according to Automotive News Europe: "Germany, France, the UK Italy and Spain collectively registered 79,300 full-electric vehicles between January and March, narrowly edging past the 77,256 in China, the study found. Unit sales more than doubled in Europe in that period, compared with the first quarter of 2019. In China, sales fell by more than half in the quarter because of the lockdown. Across Europe, Renault's Zoe is by far the best-selling battery-powered vehicle, ahead of the Peugeot 208 EV and Volkswagen eGolf, while Mitsubishi's Outlander PHEV was the best-selling plug-in hybrid"

AUDI QUIETLY ADDS E-TRON SPORTBACK TO AUSTRALIA WEBSITE

"Audi Australia has quietly added the e-tron Sportback to its website, confirming not only its planned released for the Australian market but also numerous specifications. The addition of the e-tron Sportback to the Audi Australia website confirms the low profile electric vehicle will be (as with the e-tron SUV) offered in two variants, the 50 quattro and 55 quattro." says The Driven: "The 50 quattro will offer a smaller 71kWh battery than its larger 55 quattro stablemate’s 95kWh pack. The 64kWh usable capacity from this pack will give it a driving range of more than 300km according to Audi Australia’s website. The 55 quattro sportback will be offered in two drivetrain options, with up to 446km driving range from its 86kWh usable capacity. "

ELECTRIC SUPERMINI SHOOT-OUT

"Battery-powered superminis make sense for daily urban use, and soon we’ll be spoiled for choice. We pit the Mini against the Peugeot e-208 and Renault Zoe" says Autocar: "The Renault’s range is truly impressive, plus it offers decent practicality. Yet it can’t match the other two for quality, refinement or driver appeal. And it feels less expensively engineered than its pair of rivals, which would be fine if it didn’t cost more than them to buy. Less expensive versions of the Zoe make more sense than this GT Line. The Cooper S feels like nothing less than a premium product, and for driving fun it’s head and shoulders above the rest, plus at £24,900 for the entry-level model it’s fractionally the most affordable. Yet it’s hamstrung by that range"

CASE 580 EV IS A NEW ALL-ELECTRIC BACKHOE LOADER

CASE Construction Equipment introduces “Project Zeus” — the 580 EV (Electric Vehicle), the construction industry’s first fully electric backhoe loader. The power and performance of the 580 EV is equivalent to other diesel-powered backhoes in the CASE product line and provides considerably lower daily operating costs while also producing zero emissions — a motivating factor for utility and government contractors incentivized to work with equipment that leverages alternative fuels and lowers emissions.

The 580 EV is powered by a 480-volt, 90-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack that can be charged by any 220-volt/three-phase connection. While applications will vary, each charge will support most common eight-hour workdays. The battery separately powers the drivetrain and hydraulic motors, resulting in hydraulic breakout forces equal to diesel-powered machines and improved performance during simultaneous loader and drivetrain operation.
