MERCEDES EQV ELECTRIC VAN PASSES WINTER TESTS

"Mercedes-Benz subjected the EQV to an endurance test in Arjeplog, Sweden. The electric V-Class proved its operational capability under extreme conditions at temperatures as low as minus 30 degrees Celsius, icy roads and deep snow." reports Chris Randall at electrive: "According to Mercedes, this means that the battery-electric large-capacity saloon has cleared one of its last hurdles on the way to market launch in the second half of 2020.The EQV is the second model of the Mercedes-Benz technology brand EQ after the EQC. Unlike the eVito and eSprinter, it is marketed towards private customers. The six-seater large-capacity saloon is available in two wheelbases (3.20 or 3.43 metres) and with a gross vehicle weight of 3,500 kilograms. By installing individual seats or benches, the model can also carry seven or eight people. The gross capacity is 100 kWh, of which 90 kWh can be used according to the notification. The on-board charger from Delphi enables three-phase AC charging with up to 11 kW. Mercedes states the DC charging capacity with a maximum of 110 kW."

NISSAN AND UBER SIGN AGREEMENT TO GO GREEN WITH 2,000 LEAFS IN LONDON

"A fleet of all-electric Nissan Leafs will be made available for Uber drivers in London as part of a new deal inked by the Japanese car maker and rideshare company Uber." says TheDriven.io: "There are some 45,000 drivers in London using the Uber app, and the deal between Nissan and Uber forms another step along Uber’s goal to reach 100% electric vehicles for its drivers from 2025. The agreement comes after Nissan provided 20 Leafs to Uber to trial making them available for hire through the rideshare company’s app in London in 2016."

NEW NISSAN Z: FROM 400HP V6 TWIN TURBO TO ELECTRIC POWERTRAIN

"When a manufacturer starts testing a prototype at the famed Nurburgring circuit in Germany, they mean business. It also means that the car is well on the way towards production. Late last year, Nissan started testing a camouflaged Z sports car at the Nurburgring, so, yes, a new Z is on the way." says Forbes: " in 2025, wearing a totally new body, Nissan will launch a radical all-new Z brandishing the company’s signature e-Power series hybrid system. Nissan tell us that the dual motors generate 335hp and 516 lb-ft of torque, but in a next-gen Z powered by such a system, a source suggests we could expect upwards of 400hp."

FORD KUGA PLUG-IN HYBRID REVIEW

"The latest Ford Kuga is available with a choice of powertrains – including a plug-in hybrid engine for the first time" says the UK magazine Driving Electric: "Powered by a comparatively large 2.5-litre petrol engine and an electric motor fed by a 14.4kWh battery, the Kuga Plug-In Hybrid promises rock-bottom running costs and the ability to waft along for 35 miles on electric power alone.”

BRITISH FIRM TURNING CLASSICS INTO EVS ADDS MORE MODELS TO PORTFOLIO

"As more and more people warm up to the idea of converting cherished classic cars to run on battery-electric power, new firms offering the service are emerging. In some cases, the service is even being offered by the automakers that originally built the classics." according to MotorAuthority: "One that has emerged from the United Kingdom is Lunaz. The company, located close to the Silverstone Circuit, offers a comprehensive service where the original vehicle is stripped down to its bare chassis and then everything is restored or renewed, apart from the powertrain of course. It's pricey—a turnkey car from Lunaz starts at 350,000 British pounds (approximately $416,180). Nevertheless, demand is growing. After initially starting with the 1953 Jaguar XK120, Lunaz is now also offering a 1961 Rolls-Royce Phantom V, 1956 Rolls-Royce Cloud, and a 1961 Bentley S3 Continental Flying Spur."

IDTECHEX DISCUSSES WHY BATTERIES ARE ESSENTIAL FOR THE MARITIME SECTOR

"In 2020 vessel owners have had to deal with an "emissions control world" for the first time as an unprecedented step-change to the sulphur content allowed in marine fuels was enforced, falling from 3.5% to 0.5% (by fuel mass) globally. In shipping, emissions of harmful Sulphur-oxides (SOx) and Nitrous-Oxides (NOx) make a very large contribution to their respective global emissions; by burning cheap and dirty heavy-fuel oil, just 15 of the biggest ships emit more NOx and SOx than all the world's cars put together. " says a report on Yahoo Finance today: "IDTechEx expects this shortage of traditional solutions to significantly drive uptake of batteries in the largest ships in order to meet the new stringent emissions regulations. Leisure boats are the cars of the marine world: they are usually personally owned and small enough to make the jump to pure electric with today's technology (typically travelling short distances inland). Similarly, ferries are the largest vessel capable of becoming pure electric because, with well-planned routes, they can opportunity charge. Coastal vessels, like tug-boats, can hybridise easily with batteries comparable in size to a pure electric car (100kWh), saving hundreds of thousands of dollars by reducing fuel consumption over the course of a year."

ELECTRIC VEHICLES FACE LONG-TERM TIER ONE BATTERY BOTTLENECK

"The electric vehicle (EV) industry faces a long term lithium ion battery bottleneck for the highest quality of cells." says the experts at Benchmark Mineral Intelligence: "New data from Benchmark Mineral Intelligence shows that while forecast demand for lithium ion batteries only begins to exceed capacity in 2029, Tier One cells are going to be in the shortest supply throughout this period, especially as we enter 2021.         It is an issue that has already been faced by European auto OEMs especially in the last 6 months. The industry will be looking to Tier Two cell manufacturers to step up and meet the burgeoning demands of the EV industry, but this is not as straight forward as it may seem. Not only do these Tier Two manufacturers need to qualify with the major automakers — a lengthy and high specification process — but they will also need to ensure they can grow their capacity at an increasingly rapid rate without compromising quality."

VEHICLE SUBSCRIPTION PLANS EVOLVE AMID CHALLENGES

"People will keep buying and leasing vehicles, “but subscription services will find a place,” predicts Vince Zappa. He is president of Clutch Technologies, a Cox Automotive company that offers a digital platform to dealers and automakers to run vehicle-subscription initiatives, many of them evolving." reports Wards Auto: "A one-vehicle subscription service might appeal to consumers who want to get the feel of an electric vehicle but aren’t ready to buy one, he says, adding that shorter-term proposition could aid automakers who “want to introduce EVs at faster rates” than people are buying them. Steer is a start-up company that offers subscriptions exclusively for battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. It allows participants to swap vehicles monthly. Sixteen models are in the fleet."
